Not much you can do about that one now except learn from the experience. ALWAYS arm the electronics before inserting the igniter to prevent a ballistic return. As the rockets get more complex a checklist becomes your friend. Create one and let it evolve as your rocketry progresses.
What about having a remove before flight tag taped to the rocket that you only remove when the electronics are armed?
That really really sucks. I had a ballistic rocket on an L2 attempt. 3" Honest John pushing mach 1 on a J435 and the motor actually failed to ignite the powder. All we heard after it going up was the whistling sound of a bomb being dropped and then it hit about 20 yards from the flight line in a thud.
