Today, I finally crested the mountain that is this sim... The Estes OLYMPUS (7293)

The sim is done using OR 22.02, so no PBT was needed for air fins. The only error message is concerning the PBT needed to get the motor retainer properly placed. Adding a transition would "cut off" the backside of the rocket, leading to the wrong appearance (and perhaps drag calculation?). I know that the retainer looks to be too big in the image above... It's an optical illusion. The fins cut off the view of the top and bottom of the body tube, making the retainer look like it's bigger than it really is. The difference is obvious when you look at it from the back end.

Due to the lack of ability for OR to give a proper appearance for metallic paints on flat parts, I opted to use red instead of the metallic copper or gold called out in the instructions for the fins and nosecone/payload section. The face card makes it look like the fins and nosecone are reddish anyways. The markings are based on actual scans of the decals included in the kit. The face card makes the the name decal appear to be larger than it actually is. As there are only six lightning bolts for the fins, I opted to place them on the fins you'd be looking at from the sides and front of the rocket. I omitted the Estes logo and 2nd name decal in the sim.

I want to give special thanks to JimZ for the scans used*. Bernard Crawley for proofing the work. And a very special "Thank You" to Tim Egan for the physical sample.

Thanks Guys!

*My sample is in a box after my move, and hard to reach.

Today's addition is the Estes Space Eagle (3209) (in catalog 2010-2014)

There is a balsa noseconed version of this kit, but "due to the world shortage of balsa blah blah blah..." we have the plastic NC version. The source of the information and scans used for this sim, Ken Foss, gave me the measurement on the exposed section of the NC as 4 1/8" (done with a micrometer), which is dangerously close to the sim I have with the PNC-50YR, but not an exact match. No part number for the plastic NC is given in the instructions. The instructions for the balsa NCd version is found on Estes' website, and includes the part number for the BNC (073001), but it doesn't match any of the ones I've simmed, or any in any database I have found yet.

The sim is WYSIWYG... Using OR 22.02, the only "trick" needed here was the PBT needed to mount the engine hook (which is the source of all the error messages as well). When OR updates to allow for freeform mass objects I'll update the sim and eliminate those error messages.

This is one of the cases where the previous owners of Estes skimped on the decals. They didn't even supply decals needed to recreate what was seen on the facecard or in the instructions (they're not the same). So, you didn't even get what was needed for a full "photographic side". What you see above is what is possible with what was "in the bag". They didn't include any decals for the right side of the fins... Only 6 decals for the left side of the fins. If you want to replicate the appearance of the facecard, or instructions, you'll need to create at least 3 of the 6 fin decals mirrored from those in the kit (the angle shown on the facecard only had 3 fins' right sides showing). Also, as the name decal is in black only, *AND* there is an extra red stripe (based on the facecard's appearance (it's one of the two used on the decal placement image in the instructions (just above and below the lower/upper body tube joint))), a second name decal could be created and placed on the backside. Since the kit has no launch lug*, this would give the builder two "photographic" sides instead of only one**. BTW If you get the impression I'm not happy about these kinds of omissions you'd be correct.

Remember, in the images below, the kit does not come with the decals needed to reproduce the appearance shown (though no version gave any indication of a 2nd name decal).

1678058453872.png1678081719392.png

In the instructions you see 3 red bands... The kit only came with two. If you want to add a 2nd name decal, you'd need a fourth.

1678082985942.png1678107126889.png

*Ken's kit included a 2" long launch lug, but the instructions never have the builder glue it on, and show how the launch rod is fit between the main body tube and any two of the "sonic tubes".

** To see what it would look like with two name decals in the facecard's livery, I've added alternate liveries and the right side fin decals to the sim, but have them deactivated at the moment. To get the right side fin to look correct you can uncheck the "Use separate appearance..." select box, or use the file, and then the "Appearance Offset" needs to be changed to X 0.065 and Y 0.05

Again... A Very Special "THANK YOU!!!" to Ken Foss.

UPDATE 3/8/2023: All versions of the Estes Cherokee-D have all been updated to OR 22.02, and as such, there are no more "air fins" required to give the proper appearance. As such no PBTs need to be deleted to give reasonably accurate flight data (though PBTs have been added to allow for engine hook and motor retention hardware placement. I *STRONGLY* recommend that folks who have previously downloaded the files delete them and download these new files.

You can download the files in post #23.

And now for something *NEW*... It's the Estes Red Nova (7266)

This was done with OR 22.02. So, no PBTs needed for the fins (other than the the Engine Hook (which hopefully will one day be changed into a "Freeform Mass Object"). However I did add some to model the Wood Strips' rounded tops, and tips... I'm fairly sure that they're be of minimal effect on flight data.

Livery is based on the instruction's images. Though, I didn't alter the decals other than to clean them up... So, there's more than what the instructions actually show. Based on my experience as a Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist in the USAF, I opted to make the back of the rocket (seen in the image above) also face up when viewed from its side pointed to the left. An actual weapon would likely have two points along its length for lifting, but the supplied decals lacked a second one to facilitate that.

This kit is a natural for a conversion into a 2 stage model... So...

Changed out the motor mount with a longer one, added a 2nd one, cut the body tube down to create one for the booster, and added a tube coupler. Now since this is gap staged, I'd put in a vent into the booster (hidden by the circular black decals). The error messages I got on the sim were tied directly to the PBTs for the Engine Hooks, and the Engine Hooks themselves.

Thanks to @Starfire73, and Alan Sinclair for the scans, photos, and info needed to sim this up (mine is awaiting my return to the US).

Now, if I can just prevent mine from CATOing... (Yes, this is a reference to other manufacturer's naming blunders! Now... Bite The Wax Tadpole!!!)

I'm sure you're all a quiver to see what I've notched up this time... Today it's the Estes Fletcher (2444)

Measurements (other than the decals) are from my own personal sample. I have to thank kuririn for the widths of the white decals (you can't see them on the white backing paper in my scans (which I provided to JimZ)). Sim was done with OR 22.02, there are no tricks, and no error messages you need to deal with...

A kit that was 65 years in the making... The Estes 65th Anniversary Blue Sapphire (9986)...

1682358747244.png

Only 300 were sold... And I was lucky enough to purchase 3 of these... One to build, one to archive, and the last... was *GIVEN* to JimZ (no money taken from him for the kit). So, No hating on me...

Here's the problem I faced with the sim... The upper fin's notch, to accommodate the lower fin, left a gap from my sample (which was then donated to JimZ (He opted to take the open bagged one)). I opted to sim this up with the gap filled. I've saved the original shape in a separate .ork file with just the fin for those who might need this.

I've added a phantom transition to eliminate the body tube discontinuity error message. A PBT was needed for the engine hook. The NC size is based on info from Raythain.

Finishing up the original four Pro Series II rockets is the Estes Pro Series II Partizon:

I shifted the forward LL up closer to the CG, as I would fear that being as far behind it as it was, would only encourage binding on the launch rod/rail in windy situations. Other than that, the design is stock, and after editing out the CG/CP markings, this is a WYSIWYG file.

[EDIT] Redid the paint and decals... no more air fins, no more internal tubes for decals. I did keep the nonstandard LL location.

Here's the image that I used for the fins...

Partizon Fin Template:

The previous version was downloaded 110 times
Wow, thanks man. I'm using these to do flight sims right now for the Estes Partizon, and Leviathan I built 10 years ago!! Finally getting to send them up this Saturday! Wow this made it sooooo much easier. I added my spec's and weight, thank you!!!!

In reviewing the Estes Bandit (K-48) kit, I've found that the paint scheme I *HAD* used was likely incorrect (JimZ posted new images that made it clear that my forward black section was too long, and the rear black paint was too short). I've corrected the paint scheme, and in the process updated the sim to eliminate the Air Fin needed for the decal placement on the yellow fin. As such, the new sim is far more accurate than the previous version, and I recommend that the new version be downloaded, and the previous version deleted. Sim can be found in Post #125.

Now, there seems to be a few people who (for some reason) like to apply the fins of the Estes Cherokee-E backwards...

Today it's the Estes Green Eggs (1718)...

Today, I've managed to update the Estes Magnum Payloader (2032)...

and the modified version

Now the sim for the stock and modified version have accurate clear parts, and the "air fins" have been removed, thus the sim is now capable of giving accurate flight information w/o modification. You can download the updated .ork files can be found in post #20

Again, if you downloaded any of the previous versions of the Magnum's .ork files, you really should delete them and download the latest version.

If you find any errors, or have feedback

Today I've uploaded updates to the Estes Maxi Icarus (1331) and the Icarus (1277).

The updates eliminate the air fins that prevents the sims from giving accurate flight info without modification, and make the clear payload tubes transparent.
You can download the updated files from post 33.

If you downloaded any of the previous versions of the Maxi Icarus, or the Icarus .ork files, you should delete them and download the latest version.

Today's updates are the Estes Warp II (2022)

And the Estes Loadstar II (3227)

Both have been brought up to my current standard of labeling, and adjusted to use the features of OR 22.02. So, no more need for deleting air fins to get accurate flight data, and you have the added advantage of the clear payload section actually being transparent.

If you downloaded any of the previous versions of the Warp II, or the Loadstar II .ork files, you should delete them and download the latest version.

Continuing the updating of older sims, I've now updated the Estes Transtar Carrier (1982)

Gone are the "air fins", and as such, the need to delete them for accurate flight performance. The only PBT needed now is for the Engine Hook.

If you downloaded the previous version of the Transtar Carrier .ork file, you should delete it and download the latest version.

If you find any errors, or have feedback, please use my new feedback thread. Please follow the link to and direct your questions, or comments to it or send me a PM. Finally managed to Update the Estes SKI-HI (1365)

Gone are the 16 "Air Fins" needed to make this sim work visually. It now has no warnings at all, and should provide solid flight performance data without modification. As such, the previous version should be deleted and the new one downloaded from post 480.

If you downloaded the previous version of the SKI-HI .ork file, you should delete it and download the latest version.

I've updated the Big Daddy's files to correct issues with the decals on the fins and to eliminate the "Air Fins" needed to accurately display them in OR 22.02.

For the original livery, this is a superficial update, but for the 2006 livery (seen above) the old file really should be deleted and a fresh file downloaded.

Files are available in post 237.

Lets start with today's addition with some definitions...
Rogue
noun \ˈrōg\
: A man who causes trouble in a playful way
: Estes kit #0818, one of James Zalewski's favorite kits.
verb (used with object), rogued, ro·guing
: to uproot or destroy (plants, etc., that do not conform to a desired standard).
: to perform this operation upon: to rogue a field.

Today it's the Estes Rogue (818)

I had to add a phantom centering ring to eliminate the unpainted appearance of the end of the body tube. There's a PBT for the engine hook, but no other tricks involved.

Me? I'm a native rogue (I'm from the Rogue Valley, and my advocacy (which includes roguing trees and harmful plants)).

But seriously, This sim is dedicated to JimZ - Thanks Jim for all your contributions to the hobby!

Today its one of the rockets that has long needed some love... The Estes Trident (K-33)

Top (angled) view

Here's the rarely seen left side...

For reasons I don't know, this one may appear to not give flight data. By deleting the phantom transition, running the simulation, then restoring the phantom transition, It works (Thanks to Rob Goring for figuring that out). Livery of the original kit was up to the builder as it didn't include decals. To give it this look, I combined the images of the Trident decals from JimZ site (based on the Estes Trident II (2033), the decals from the Semroc Trident (KV-71) clone of the kit, and the Estes 1971 Catalog.

My original Trident was built by my 9th grade band teacher... Mr. D. He gave it to me when I bought his beautifully built Centuri Saturn 5 (KS-12). However, due to the build quality of the Trident (its pretty awful), I wasn't impressed.. To be honest, I hated it. When I had a spare motor, I decided to launch it to lose it. Then I saw how beautifully it flew... My heart grew two sizes in that flight... I love my Tridents, and can't wait to get to launch them again.

The Trident on the left is my first clone done long before JimZ site existed. The one on the right was made by Mr. D. The PNC-50K nosecone replaced the one that was lost when the shock cord broke on its last launch. The unpainted section on the clone is a replacement for the damaged tube where the kit zippered on its maiden flight Image links to flickr, and more photos.

From a FB post, I've learned that the Trident is JimZ's favorite kit.

So, I dedicate this sim to JimZ and to Rudy Domitrovich.

Well... I'm on a roll... Today I'm announcing that I'll be adding another *TWO* sims. It's the Estes Javelin & Super Flea Combo (815)

I've got the files on hold for release until I can get the dimensions of the screw eye and streamer from JimZ.

These have been on my list for a while to do. I finally managed to snag a pair and get them to JimZ to scan (He'll be updating his files soon). The fins on these sims were done with the new scan of the pattern sheet. The actual fins are hand cut from 1/16" thick balsa. No special tricks here WYSIWYG. I know that the actual BNC-5E is a little blunter than what I've managed to recreate here... It's better than the OR default shape, but I'm still not thrilled by the simmed up shape.

1707045884457.png

In a departure from my typical attempts to match the stock livery, I'm basing these on the 1983 Estes Catalog's appearance. They looked to be painted "International Orange" in the catalog, and not "Orange" or "Bright Orange".

Personally, I'd LOVE to upscale the Javelin to BT-60.

Ok this one is now ready to upload... The Estes Industries Rocket Plan No. 23 Raven

This little glider was no cruise... Pods are still a bit of a challenge. I figured out the errors I made, and managed to get it to work... Save one issue. I didn't model the elastic string used to activate the flaps (it can be done... but not without several boring days of adding miniscule inner tubes to fake it. When I get the opportunity to build one for myself, rather than using "High Heat Aluminum Paint", I'm going to use 2" wide Aluminum Tape.

The dark grey and black areas are painted balsa and body tube. The light grey on the back of the glider represents the "High Heat Aluminum Paint"/Aluminum tape, brown is the motor, and the reddish/orange color is the hinge material.

Now, as so far as the flight accuracy? I'm unsure, but it has no error messages from OR, and the motors in the sim are the ones recommended from the plans.

Today let's take a look at the Estes EAC FIRECAT "Reconnaissance Drone" (806)

The kit's stock decals were taken from the Estes Bandit (K-48). Some modification of the decals are required to recreate the stock appearance (e.g. cutting off black bands, separating parts of decals to use elsewhere, etc.). No other decals are required to recreate the stock appearance. However, in the sim, the decals on the nosecone will appear slightly tapered (widest at the front), it's the way OR handles the decals. So, think of it as an optical illusion. I opted to add the (optional) antenna in the sim (simply delete it if you don't want it). There's a few warnings, but this should be OK for flight data. One caveat... I don't have a BNC-50BD nosecone to sample, so, I modded the plastic nosecone (PN 072009) from the BT-60 based Estes Hojo (7240) by downscaling it and changing it to solid balsa.

1707479010880.png

Instructions can be found at JimZ.

When I get back stateside, I'm looking forward to using the Mini HOJO Nosecone to make one of these.

Today, it's the Estes Pegasus (0806)*

This is one of the most difficult sims I've ever created. It required 15 pods (I probably should have added one additional pod), nearly one for each fin this rocket has. There are a number of warnings (15), I have no idea about how well this will do providing actual flight data. The fins and decals are based on the files found on JimZ's site. The fin patterns found there are a computer generated outline, and not a scan of the actual parts. The decals are based on the scanned ones found on the site. However, I cleaned them up, which included slight changes in the shapes of some of them (done to create matching decals from one side to the other). You may notice that there is a gap in the red bar at the bottom of the sides of the engine pod (nacelles), Unfortunately, this is due to how OR handles asymmetrical decal applications, and I wasn't able to fix them (the real decal wraps onto the underside of the engine). Also, due to a similar issue, I had to "cut" the "Conduit Cover" to get the grey color to show on the top of it. I noted this in the documentation (see sim's comments).

*Per Available Files: The model found in the catalog and the version that you can make from the files currently available on JimZ's site differ... Here's what I found, and I am not making any accusations against JimZ. His site has what he was able to turn up, and it is clear that Estes didn't release a kit that was exact to the model seen in the catalog. Also, based on photos of laser cut fin sets, available from MoreRockets and eRockets, they seem to match JimZ's site.

Below is the 1978 Catalog's image of the Pegasus, with the differences I've found noted.

The Engine Pod is mounted under the wing, instead of flush with the top of the wing. The leading edge of the Engine Pod (Nacelle) extends beyond its sides. There are decal/paint differences.

This one lived up to its name... It was *BRUTAL*... It's the Estes Menace (2173)

This one was *TOUGH*!!! Pods, *AND* having to fabricate decals. Then I had to figure out where they should go. This sim has no special tricks (save two (they have no effect on flight performance)... I wonder who figures them out). However, I've noticed that when I open the file I often find the altitude info (lower left side of the window) is missing. After running the simulation it pops up again. Livery is closely based on the "Conventional" paint scheme. There are "decals" that appear on the facecard that the instructions instruct you to draw with a pen. Others that, if applied as seen on the facecard means that you don't have enough to apply on the opposite side to match. Other missing decals, the red and black bands for the "Conventional" livery (and the yellow bands for the "Wild" scheme), are presumably intended to be painted on.

EDIT Nobody was able to crack the tricks... I faked the lowest section of the intake with lines to give the appearance of a shadow at its joint, and I added the decals... However, if you downloaded the file, I forgot to add the fin trapezoid decals... I've fixed it.

Stock decals...

Today, I'm adding the Estes Astro Bee (1356)

This sim is based on images found on P.RS.C's site. The scan of the fins had a ruler, but it was a greyscale image. There appears to be a small angle on the trailing edge of all three of the larger fins. Since each seems to have the same angle, I opted to preserve it in this sim. The decal scan, while lacking a ruler for scale was very good, and I found a set of the decals in my personal stock here in China. Rather than rescan them, I used the scan I downloaded, using the information I gleaned from the physical sample. The blues in the sim is based on the average color from the decals. However, the instructions call for Insignia Blue for the fins and nosecone.

Yesterday it was the Astro Bee... Today it's the Bumble Bee (Estes DOM Winner, Jan. 1980)...

Designed by Roger Smith, from Brookville, Ohio. This 13mm powered rocket should be good for testing the winds.

Instructions (such as they are) can be found at JimZ's site.
