Except they weren't the world's first. The USSR had a similar accident but kept it secret. If they hadn't, our engineers might have chosen not to test in a pure O2 pressurized capsule.

I was in the air force and I had just received training in handling and servicing with pure oxygen. I knew the dangers of pure oxygen and why not NASA? I was mad and I uttered several flight line words.
