Is kevlar really THAT much better than nylon?

Not sure it was mentioned, but you want to look at the shock load rating of the materials not the ultimate tensile strength. The shock loading of Kevler is lower relative to its other properties. So you have to overbuild a bit more for the same margin. Kevlar also degrades quicker under repeated shocks.

Yep, it is the Shock that breaks parts of the recovery system.
Lots of way to dissipate the kinetic energy during deployment to minimize the shock load.
