I remember when:
A candy bar (full size) was 5 cents
A bottle of Coke was 12 cents (7 for the pop and 5 for deposit)
A gallon of gas was 17 cents
You could go to the Wonder Bread store and buy 5 loaves of bread for a dollar.

I remember candy bars for 3 cents.
And my Dad would drive to the other side of town just to get gas for 1/2 cent per gallon less----and he could recite the prices at every gas station on our side of town.
And I couldn't afford an Estes Saturn V then either.

Wow! ...and I thought I was old...

I remember Estes Series III motors

I pretty much remember what missleman said, except I think our gas was 19c. When I was a kid we'd gather the pop bottles to fund our sugar habit :)

The bread store (think its a Wonder store) near us sells their old bread for a buck for as much as you can cram into a plastic sack. And you can cram a lot! Does that count? The wife stocks up occasionally when we want to feed the ducks at nearby ponds. It varies from being edible to moldy...but the ducks and geese don't care.

Speaking of old things... rstaff3 - that looks like a Fireball XL-5 in your avatar

I remember...candy bars for $50

coke for $1.09

Wanting a quest starter set at the age of 5.

My quarter a week allowance went for
10 cents for Choco-Pop
12 cents for a comic book
3 cents for a box of pumpkin seeds.

More on topic:

Kitbashing meant taking a kit and building it as fast as you could and launching it. Last record I knew of was 14 minutes from opening the bag to liftoff.

Obviously this was before ready-to-fly "kits".

... A phone call cost a dime
... There was only one phone company
... There was only one phone book
... "satellite" TV required a 12-foot dish in your backyard, and you got an additional 20 channels, most of which were foreign.

I remember 15cent McDonald's hamburgers......
Being the first on the street to get a color television to watch the '64 Phillies in the World Series.....(whoops).......
Hearing about the Kennedy assassination watching live television........
Watching man set foot on the moon in some grainy video feed........
The Cuban missile crisis........
Fallout drill discussions in school.......
The smell of mimeograph ink........
The lowest gas I remember is 23.9........
Dad getting a new muscle car that got 7 mpg.......5 when he stomped on it......
Telephone party lines.........

I remember a world without VCRs, computers, microwaves, cable television, video games, air bags, seat belts, automotive head rests, caller ID, internet, cell phones, Boston winning the World Series .........

we lived in the country, 4 miles from this little party store on the middle of nowhere.
My sister and I used to pull our wagon and pick up bottles out of the ditches along the way. Returnable pop bottles were 5 cents and long neck beer bottles were 2 cents.
By the time we got to the store we had enough for a bottle of pop each and a bag full of candy.

the Helms bakery truck
the Milkman

gas when i paid attention was 25c and then Gas Wars were price wars, not ventures to iraq.

4-finger lids
:D

I remember going to my favorite hobby shop and picking up a Centuri kit and thinking, "Centuri?!? Why would I pay $10 for this clearance Little Joe II kit when I can get 3 nice new Estes kits for the same price?!? And why is it on clearance? Who is Centuri anyway?"

The thing that I remember most won't be remembered by anyone else at all:

Listening to Jack Buck and Mike Shannon call St. Louis Cardinals baseball games on KMOX on a lazy summer afternoon floating around the pool - and here comes the jingle of one of their primary sponsors played on 10 second breaks:

For a hole in your roof,
Or a Whole New Roof -
Frederick Roofing!!!"

I remember Estes Series III motors
I still have Estes Series III motors and Series II motors.

Penny candy was really a penny.
Popcicles at the corner drug store were a nickle.
Ice cream cones for a dime.

The TV channel selector had 12 channels, 2 through 13, plus something called "UHF". To make that work you had to use a box that sat on top the TV.

If the TV broke, you could pull out the tubes, take them to the grocery store or drug store, and test them in the tube tester. I fixed more than a couple TVs with tubes broken off in the socket, tubes plugged in the wrong sockets, or just tossed back inside in a hopeless jumble.

My first job, making 75 cents an hour fixing TVs and $5 for helping install roof antennas. Being told I could save up my pay to buy school clothes. Deciding it was a bad idea to work for my dad. Being allowed to order from Estes instead. Deciding he wasn't so bad.

"In Living Color" was an announcement made before some TV shows, not the name of a TV show.

Seeing a parade on TV, with the caption "Live from London via Telstar".

Echo I.

Sputnik.

Alan Shepard* and Freedom 7. The whole school sitting in the cafeteria watching it on a 19" Zenith. Being certain as I watched that watching it was changing me forever.

(* Someone here is from Derry NH. So was Shepard.)

I couldn't figure out why they made that announcment since the show was in black and white on our TV.

I remember rolling my own ignitors (nichrome around a pencil lead)

I remember "A" booster motors

heck, I remember 1/2A and 1/4A booster motors...

*I* remember a rocket company run by Vern Estes and when you went there you got to meet him (and his lovely wife Gleda :) )

I remember fireworks at every hardware store...

*I* remember my grandmothers phone number in Schroon Lake, NY (it was 346)

I remember that little yellow disk you put inside the "45" so that you could play it on your phonograph

I *realize* that half the people reading this group have not got a CLUE what I just said :D

I remember "HiFi"

I remember putting Mickey Mantle cards in the spokes of my bike tires!

I remember little wax soda bottles with sugar surup in them (ugh!) LOL

I remember "stingray" bikes with sissy bars

I remember roller skating and drive in movies (still have my skate key)

I remember being a whole lot younger than I currently am....

Yep. You are right about that :). Our new post office is named after him; and so is RT 93.

Originally by Jim Fliss ~ I *realize* that half the people reading this group have not got a CLUE what I just said

And I am depressed that I do...

I remeber:

  • DOS v1
  • The Altair 8080 & Hunt the Wumpus
  • Acoustic Couplers & Teletype
  • Baudot & EBCDIC
  • When 104 Octane Leaded Gas could be bought at the pump.
  • Soda machines with glass bottles that you pulled out from the front.
  • 8 Tracks (and 4 tracks)
  • Reel to Reel at home
  • Saturday morning Hanna Barbera cartoons
  • Star Trek, Hawaii Five-O, Mannix, and the Galloping Gourmet
  • Walter Cronkite & Huntley-Brinkley
  • The nightly news with the Vietnam body counts
  • Riding a bicycle without looking like a knight in shining armor - and if I fell off and skinned my knee - that was a lesson.
  • Gosh I feel old...

What were some of the great things about those days?

I remember being able to walk for miles trick-or-treating and my Mom would not have to go with me

I remember being able to go into the local hardware store and buy a box of 22s (and I was a KID) without having to fill in 79 government forms

I remember being able to carry a pocketknife to school if I wanted to

I remember being able to buy a 45 for about 39 cents, and an entire album was $3 or $4

I remember being able to ride my bike to the store and leave it outside for an hour without a paddlock

Waaay to many flashbacks. I probably a little young for this but here goes...

-When you told someone your phone number, it was general 47605 (434-7605)
-When school lunch was 15 cents
-When you could bring CHRISTMAS cards to school
-When mom used to call the radio we had a Victrola
-Vacuum Tubes
-Milk containers that were square
-paper straws
-parental fear
-leaded gas
-real tin cans
-The Ed Sullivan Show...in Black and White

We still have that. In fact they recently went back to the old design.

Cool as milk!

Alvin Stardust?
I think you refer to the reincarnation of the Wombles.
There's a hole in my shoe...
We had a big stash of candles. At least they gave you a warning when the power cuts would be.
