How can I reduce recovery distance on a 8km flight

The fastest decent rocket I have is the one I use a JLCR on. Only the nose cone and the bundled chute come out at apogee. The bundled chute provide all the drag needed to make sure the rocket falls straight down, fins first. Much faster than my DD rockets that split in the middle, even without a drogue.

I wouldn't worry about tearing a commercial chute. Skydivers open their chutes at 120 mph/200 km/h. You can use a slider to make the chute open slower. Over the last 20 years, the only chute I ever tore was one made from an umbrella skin, the seams split. I had a DD rocket that failed to open at apogee and was coming in ballistic at about 300 mph when the main deployed. The rocket didn't survive, but the chute did. I'm still using the chute.
