It's a 1/4" rod. I forget how long it is - maybe 4 feet.

All Aerotech Kits and pads are based on 1/4" launch rod technologies...

The Mantis rod was 1/4" diamter and something between 4.5 and 5 feet long. It loses almost 9 inches in the rod anchor at the bottom. The short rod combined with the Mantis Dance are no thrill. K, they are a thrill, but in a very bad way. Like a horro movie thrill.

Since you mentioned tripod, you may avoid the "dance" as long as your CG is low and the base is heavy or weighted down.

Use a 6 foot long steel rod.

Meade is a good company that also sells some cheap stuff. If it's a wood tripod I'd say go ahead and use it. I use one myself but it's not a Meade.
