Hello. I've thought about joining NAR. Not sure what Tripoli is. I will check it out. I have a reasonably sized field behind my house that I can launch rockets for fun. Not really leaning towards the high powered side of things at this point. My 4 year old grandson lives about an hour away and there is an NAR club near there (Hudson, Ohio). I hope to get him involved in the hobby. Right now he likes his foam stomp rockets I got him for Christmas!
Main differences between NAR and TRA: (A) In TRA a prefect oversees L1 and L2 certifications; in NAR another NAR member is the cert authority. (B) Once certified Level 2 in TRA, you are permitted to test and launch homemade motors, albeit with certain restrictions on types of motors. In NAR homemade motors are not allowed, period.

And your model-making and finishing skills are nothing short of awesome!

Finally: welcome!

Best,
Terry

Thanks for the info. I will start with NAR when the time is right.

Also, I figured out how to get the temporary fins to work on the SLS Artemis. Basically, it's the Estes version but not with clear plexiglass. A bit of painters tape around the base of the Slrs should do the trick. One added experiment;. I cut circles from foam packing material that go in between the temp fins and the SLRs. This will provide a small amount of shock absorbing on impact. Not much but it might help.

Thanks again. I appreciate the compliment too.

Thank you for your kind comments. I was playing around with that type of approach last night. I slit a piece of body tube and was trying it around the SRB. The problem is it's wider at the bottom where the nozzle is. I can try it up higher and test it with the old string and swing to see if it's stable. I think I might be able to get it to work. One other thought was to maybe put four b70 pieces of body tube around the base somehow but I think your idea is better.
I figured out a way to do the temporary fins. Basically it's the same concept as the Estes Artemis but without using plexiglass. I had to drill holes in the bottom of the slrs. They were solid lightweight cedar which I turned on my wood lathe. Bt5s fit in there nicely then I built them up to a BT50. One other little experiment was to use some foam packing material cut into circles which will provide a little shock absorbing action on landing. It won't be much but it might help.

You may have inspired me to do the tower/crawler for my 1:100 static Saturn. Does your Saturn have the transparent panels?

My little claim to fame: my boss did the recovering study on the crawler to insure that it could get the new SLS load up the hill to the pad.

Welcome! You're a better and more prolific builder than I am!
