I assume you've already read up on the Aurora Project that used it. The younger Stroud (can't recall which name was who) was pretty prompt and replying to questions I sent. I suggest you try that.

Never used one, though a guy brought one to our last launch. He likes the performace, however he did note some minor difficulty in getting the CO2 cartriges. Apparently these are special refills that have, IIRC, a threaded neck.

Accororing to him you don't need BP as Pyrodex will work well for the tiny charge which opensd the valve.

I just ordered the kit from RCS today & found a place that sells the CO2 threaded carts. Hopefully they will work.....

Jeff,
Have you used this system yet?
Would you recommend it?

I use it, I love it, I won't use large amounts of BP ever. :D

The only problem I've ever had is that the nomex sheath tends to get punctured when the 'driver' charge vents out the sides. This has been addressed by Tom, and the new units shouldn't have that problem.

Wow, it's been almost 2 years since I bought that thing & still haven't used it. I just wish I had some time to sit down & play with it to get it setup properly.

I have no idea if these are a usable size, but when I was in a quality bicycle shop last week I noticed that they were selling both threaded and unthreaded CO2 cartridges up by the front counter. They're part of a system for temporarily inflating flat tires without a pump. I didn't see the prices, but they did come in at least two different sizes.

It's really not hard at all - if you can assemble a reloadable motor, you can put together a CD3 unit. :) Granted, the O-Rings are on the small side, but anyone with a decent amount of hand-eye coordination can deal with them.

Tom suggests using *his* cartridges. From what I understand, the foil 'cap' at the end of the threads is thicker on the hobby-store cartridges, and the plunger might not pierce it properly.

(I could be mistaken, though... :D )

I'm a lot more likely to be the one who is mistaken, having never even touched a CD3 system. I have no idea whatsoever if those cartridges I saw would work - just thought I'd mention seeing them. It was a standard case of rocketeers' myopia: I saw something interesting and immediately wondered how it could be used in rockets.
