Eugene Stoner was the respected small arms designer who created a long list of high performance weapon systems. Most notably his AR series of rifles have been adopted, manufactured, modified and used by many nations on planet Earth. Armalite, TRW, Oerlikon are three of the manufacturers who have produced different versions his designs which are still in use today.

This unusual photo shows both Eugene M. Stoner, left, and Mikhail T. Kalashnikov holding the rifles they designed, and was taken in May 1990. The two met and spent time touring Washington DC and the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia. The photo is unique because here are two WW2 veterans who each designed their countries most used and copied combat rifles. E. Stoner with his AR rifle, and M. Kalashnikov with his AK. During this short visit both men, intimately familiar with the other's work, shared a common bond and became friends, "not needing an interpreter to get their thoughts across."

Eugene Stoner died at the age of 74 on April 24, 1997, and was later interred in the Quantico National Cemetery, Quantico, Virginia.
