Telemetry all the way down, which is good, but it reached the moon 5 minutes ago and no signal yet. Hopefully it will still phone home.

One of the great things our recent landers like Perseverance did was use low fi tones that didn't carry much data but served as signs of life.

The telemetry was live (I believe), but they applied it to a computer animation. Right now, they're reporting that they lost communications with the lander and are assuming the landing failed.

I'm presuming bandwidth from the lander back to mission control was limiting, though I have no deep understanding of mission constraints.

ispace's first mission to the moon appears to have ended in failure, after the company lost communications with the lunar lander.

"The team said to me that they had communication until the very end of the landing. They are investigating very hard what really happened at the time of the touchdown,” Hakamada said. “Basically they are investigating our telemetry data; regarding image and video data, our camera on board was taking images, but our communication during landing was the low gain antenna, so we can’t expect the regular communications rates.”

So, it was a (planned) bandwidth issue that prevented a landing live feed. Hopefully telemetry will support analysis sufficient to correct the problem on the next mission.

I fear one of two things happened; the "landing" stopped before they touched down, or it landed on an unstable area and tipped over. Or a dreaded lunar sand worm ate it. One almost ate Apollo 18.

Space remains hard…I hope that they have the will and funds to try again. We went 5 for 7 in our first attempts back in the 60’s, but spent what would now be $4.3B doing it.

I'm bummed they didn't succeed in the mission, but even getting there means a ton of mission objectives were achieved, so kudos to the team(s) involved. Learn, iterate, succeed.

I like how their flowchart had multiple "Success" waypoints numbered through. I think they made it to success 8 or 9. They accomplished a lot of hard things. Bummer about the landing though.

It would need the lander to communicate

From the video I saw the rover is lowered to the surface by the lander.
Tiny little thing.
Don't know if that's done autonomously or by command from earth.
I think I remember reading something about a two legged robot as well.
But even if they are deployed, how are they going to send their data back?
