If you wanted an invite, I could provide that-- but maybe you are saying you couldn't get an address you wanted...

free email service from google.com along the lines of hotmail and yahoo. When it first came out, it was by invitation only. Sellers on ebay were getting good mney for them at the beginning.

John, you need to get out more ;-)

Google's free email offering. Lots of disk space and tools
to index and search your archive. Supposed to be relativly
SPAM free, but I've heard mixed results on that.

There's a great number of reasons to use the service, especially
for mail lists and such. But I'm not convinced I need or want
Google to read my mail. Course, that's just the paranoid side
of me speaking.... :)

One of the geekiest things I've heard people using GMail for-
encrypted data backups. There's lots of space available, why
not use it? Just email your backup data to yourself.

It is relatively spam free. The only spam I got was from some porno site (still cannot figure out how they got my email). I just clicked "report spam."
Google does not read your email. Robots pick up key words such as "rockets," and "motors" and the such.
I have been using GMAIL for a while. I like it so much that I quit using my other email adresses. I just could not handle the SPAM and lack of space. I can honestly say that after using hotmail.com, yahoo.com, bolt.com (does not offer email anymore) and emailadress.com, I prefer GMAIL over all of them.
Futhermore, if anyone wants an invite to GMAIL, I have 5 invites left. Just email me at [email protected] . Put "GMAIL invite" in the subject line.

I would imagine that it is impossible to send canned meat to Gmail. :)

Just a minor nit: SPAM (upper case) is Hormel's meat product, spam (lower case) is junk e-mail. So you don't need to bother with the shift key unless you really mean junk food rather than junk mail. ;)

The official version is here:
https://www.spam.com/ci/ci_in.htm

(Note that "www.spam.com" is Hormel's website about the canned meat. It is not a place to go to subscribe to junk e-mail. :))

I've been using gmail for a month or two, no problems whatsoever! You can also use it as a pop3 account, so you can send/reviece emails via Outlook Express/Thunderbird etc.

Yeah, I knew that. Old habits die hard...

Apologies to Hormel and canned ham lovers... :)
