And here I thought a COC was someone you didn't like. But seriously -- that thing is mega-cool. Now I wanna build it as a real model rocket. Just need a body tube, some fins, a nosecone, motor mount, and whatever those thingies are on the sides that the wings attach to.

At the Air Force Academy, every year we had to take a semester of Professional Military Studies……somebody didn’t think that one through.

But you can do a C.O.C.
I was thinking, for the Christmas Ornament Conversion:

*Drill 13mm hole in bottom
*Push some clay up into the nose with chopstick
*Drill two or three 1/4 inch vent holes somewhere near top of ornament
*Epoxy a short piece of launch lug about an inch below the existing “launch lug” thingy
*Friction fit A10–3T into bottom of ornament with masking tape
*Launch
*Tumble recovery

What do you think? I don’t want to have to slice it in half lengthwise. I fear I will mess it up.

That might work. Some of my ornaments had little plastic nubs protruding on the inside which might have blocked a BT-5 tube from going in all the way. Splitting the ornament is easy, you don't have to do any cutting. Just work a hobby knife blade or thin screwdriver between the two halves and gently pry apart, working your way around.
The thread hanger is in line with one of the fins so I couldn't use it as a launch lug. Also didn't look like it was long enough to give adequate rod guidance. So I cut it off and glued a regular launch lug on instead.
Have fun!

My only problem is, if it is stable going UP, and the propellant burn REDUCES tail weight, moving CG forward, it is likely to be STABLE coming down, which means a ballistic recovery rather than tumble. the model is small, but still pointy. So you have a small plastic dart that may be very difficult to keep eyes on it to step out of the way as it comes in.

IF you can eject the motor, you could call it featherweight (which is still ballistic but so light nobody cares, although I still prefer rounded “Mosquito”-like nose cones for this.). I am not sure the model would survive the motor ejection, unless you effectively plugged the BT-5 section (do-able and legal under NAR rules).

if you choose NOT to eject, you either need to plug the motor (NAR no-no, so you can’t do it at a cub launch and your NAR insurance coverage is voided) or vent the gas somehow.

Just be careful and be smart, whatever you decide.

+1.
The three models I made were
1. Fiber MX powered with rear eject motor mount and break apart recovery (red and green Apogee).
2. Pop pod rear eject with streamer recovery (gold Estes).
3. Ported gas venting with motor case shifting back ala Astron Sprite (blue Estes).
i.e. true tumble recovery using a long engine hook.

and actually looks like it came out in about 2000, see page 5
as part of the Mighty Mites Line, as the Sliver.

The Mighty Mites I had separated at the nose, like any normal Estes rocket.

I love my Mini-Meanie! It takes a licking and keeps on flying. Seems to like being a “core sample” about half the time. It is basically indestructible.

The Ninja looks like a Mini-Meanie in a different livery.

OK, how do I get the rear eject to work on the Estes Christmas tree ornament rocket? Gotta’ look at your build thread…

I wish I still had my gold one to show you some pics.
Basically the motor mount slides out with rear eject.
A tether is connected to the front end of the motor mount and forward end of the rocket interior.
If there is enough room between the motor tube and the wall of the rocket you can fold a streamer between the centering rings. If not, then break apart recovery. That will keep it from descending ballistically.
