While I was looking for a coating to try to use the decals with the SHX-15B kit, I found this product that I had not seen before. It claimed to have TRIPLE the coverage of other clear coats. I tried coating the decals before dipping in water. It did make a nice thick coating but I still had trouble with the decals. The coating was compatible with the decals though!

I have for years followed with Testors Glosscote to seal the decals and have liked the somewhat satin finish that a light coat gives. I have seen the FUTURE finishes some members get....but since I am not a fan of really glossy-drippy look finishes I have not been interested in trying this....the brush-on mess I would make notwithstanding! Glosscote comes only in small cans and is relatively expensive! So I thought I would give this Krylon a try on the kit! Here is the kit coated with this Krylon clear coat.

You can READ in this finish!!!!  and these are VERY LOW RESOLUTION images!!!....not my cup of tea....but some of you may like it!;) Has anyone else used this?

Bill...

Looks GREAT! Some rockets DO need a super glossy finish.

So you coated the decals with this also? Then applied it as a final gloss finish? What was your base black color? (Krylon gloss black?)

I've had pretty good luck with Future polish, but it is a bit tricky to put on correctly. It's real easy to put the Future on too thick. A spray can is easier to control.

I guess the real test will be seeing how it holds up over time.

I have never seen this one before. Does the can say whether it is an enamel or an acrylic?

My only concern would be covering another brand of paint with this stuff.

Was your SHX15 Krylon over Krylon?

My concern is, for durability, how it holds up in sunlight.

Some models are outside for just a short time...sure hope that doesn't yello!

It shouldn't.

Does it say anything on the can about UV protection?

The paint is Krylon Glossy Black. I have used the "regular" Krylon clear coat...and was not really impressed with it...saw this 0500 product next to the regular at Wal-mart....same low price of $2.57. Seems like this is not just a replacement for the other....am pleased with this as to the large can and low price over the clear laquer Glosscote. The regular mentions some UV protection...although this 0500 really does not mention any of that, you might think this would be similar to the regular. Lite coats might be what I would want...but if you really wanted extra deep glossy, multiple deep wet coats might seem to be an unlimited possibility! It seems really compatible with decals and the Krylon paints for sure! The next thing would be to test compatibility with other brand paint....although it is hard for me to leave Krylon....I do like the Rustoleum Metallics. The can calls for soap and water clean-up so there must be some acrylic base. Seems like the "regular" had paint thinner cleaner clean-up. Maybe just what I have longed for!!! I am sure MICROMEISTER will chime in and deflate our balloon!;)

Sounds to me like their equivalent to Minwax Polycrylic, which is pretty much Future in a spray can with some ether to make it spray well. I used two cans of Rustoleum's clear coat to get a good finish on their cobalt blue metal flake on my Mirage. I used the last of that paint on my Vulcanite, and coated it with Polycrylic just a couple days ago. It was at least as good as the clear coat.

Here's a pic of the Vulcanite body from the launch yesterday. You can see the metal flakes sparkle. Doesn't show up like this without the clear coat. It took two thin coats to get this with the Polycrylic, it took two cans to get it on the Mirage.

Sorry BillEB:
I can't really help you much on this one, I've seen this stuff in Micheal's but have stayed away from it for one of the reasons you picked up on.. There is NO mention of UV additives at all. Most "interior" Clear coats don't add UV blockers as they are very expensive and sometimes not compatibily with waterbased materials.
I'm guessing the proof will be in the pudding. How long the material lasted before hazing or chipping off in sheets.

Just to add a little food for thought: Those miles deep Lacquer based metal flake ShowCar finishes we all are so in love with weigh a ton, are very chip sensative and have less then a 5 year expected life. We did a 30 Dupont Lacquer clear coat, Candyapple Red over silver med flake job for a client about 14 months ago, on his restored 58 Ford. Man was that a thing of beauty. I saw it recently, you just would not believe the Chip damage on the hood, Trunk lid, rockerpanels and doors. Made me almost want to cry;) I'm guessing if this Tripple Thick Glaze may suffer the same type fate.

I can vouch for the weight. My Mirage weighed just over 47 ounces finished, metal flake and clear coat, just under 32 before painting. 1/3 paint.

As for chipping, I wish that had been the worst of it. Pics posted earlier.

that 's a spray on (no fire) glaze for porous surfaces like pottery... It's probably extra thick because it gets absorbed into the surface

... looks pretty good on that rocket
