Dunno if it had been asked recently, but don't remeber seeing it...

So,

What is your favorite rocket / missile / spaceship and why?

Anything goes!

Mine:
The rocket from the Tin Tin series, it was red, three fined, and had a checkered mid section. Love it because it is a 'retro' looking thing; simple..

Star Bug from the Red Dwarf series.. Loved it! Just love the series!

The 'intergalactic crusier' from the movie 'Heavy Metal', as it floated above the Pentagon, looking like a smiley face!

And the A4-V2 from days gone by.. Well, it is the first 'operational' rocket (with a purpose) and it looks 'mean'!

Rocket: The Saturn 1B (I do live in Huntsville, after all :D )

Missile: Nike Hercules

Spaceship: Sovereign Class Starship Enterprise, NCC-1701 E

Rocket: Sea Dragon, a beautiful Big Dumb Booster design that kicks high priced corporate launcher butt.
Missile: ASM-135A ASAT. Compact, concise, elegant and can take down an orbiting satellite from a plane launch.
Spaceship: Dark Star. Looks like a Nike (shoe, not missile) and carries bombs so smart that they discuss phenomenology.

I bet the chinese might have something to say about that :D

My fav spaceship has to be the big one at the beginning of starwars.Nothing had been realised on that scale before on the big screen.

Sorry, but <a href="https://www.palantir.net/2001/gallery/mission.html">the Discovery</a> from 2001: A Space Odyssey and the <a href="https://my.execpc.com/~ppavlovi/lostplanit006.htm">Valley Forge</a>
from Silent Running both beat the Star Wars ship. Both in chronology and looks. ;)

And even though it was released after Star Wars, the <a href="https://www.amazingstarships.com/starships/models/gallery/images/nostromo.jpg">Nostromo</a>
from Alien still has it beat.

But for the all time best spaceship film opener, you have to turn to the master - Mel Brooks.
Nothing beats the <a href="https://imdb.com/title/tt0094012/posters">SpaceBalls Winnebago!</a>

Here are my favorites:

Model: Estes Alpha III because it's easy to teach kids how to build it and it was my first rocket almost 12 years ago.

"Real": SpaceShipOne one can think of it as the Wright Flyer of the 21st century. I'm sure when I'm older I'll look back on the flights of SpaceShipOne like some of you look at the moon landing.

Fictional: The Millenium Falcon because it has "illegal modifications".

My vote would have to be for discovery (2001) also. Way ahead of its time, to say the least!

Other SF ones would include the Enterprise E and the Klingon K'Tinga class battleship (the one with the fat nose)

as for *real* rockets, Goddard's first rocket and the Saturn1B

Cartoon rockets? Heck, anything the Coyote built by A.C.M.E........ LOL

The A4 is cool, but there were operational rockets before then! Remember "The rockets' red glare"? ;)

I can't just pick one of each!

Favourite rockets:
Black Arrow
R7

Favourite missiles:
Phoenix
Rapier

Favourite spaceships:
Thunderbird 3
The "Space Fort" from Dan Dare's reincarnation in "2000AD" in the late 70s.

Model: USS Andromeda - with a great imagination, comes great fun with this galactic cruiser!

Spaceship: My newest is Space ship one. Scaled Composites flew it for ~ $20 million. NASA spends $40 million just on the New Horizon 2 study (no hardware developed at all!) Sheez, give my wallet a break!

Oh so many to choose from......

Lets see, favorite actual rocket would be the V2(A4) no real reason other than I love the simple lines and when I think rocket thats what pops into my head (maybe thats the kraut in me)

Favorite movie rocket, the Valley Forge from Silent Running

Favorite TV series rocket, Space 1999 Eagle transport

How about a favorite rocket blooper,
The footage of the Mercury escape tower launching off, folled by the capsules chute deploying, all while setting on the ground. Oops.

Brianc,
Those are some pretty cool links.

As for my favorite ship, I'd have to also say the Millenium Falcon.

I agree that the DISCOVERY is ahead of its time and VALLEY FORGE has a certain flare but when it comes to power, authority and size the STAR DESTROYERS has them both beat.

DISCOVERY length...213 meters
VALLEY FORGE .........400 meters
STAR DESTOYER........1600 meters

And as for the NOSTROMO (243 meters allthough withs its refinery its 1743 meters) its little more than a tug.:D

2001 and Silent Running are why I am a sci-fi artist now. I saw 2001 in the theater when I was 4 years old.

Fireball XL5 .....

Looks like a space patrol rocket ought to and (as it was probably the first TV rocket I saw) it must have deeply affected my subconcious.

I built Fireball XL2.5 using a Big Bertha, it looked like a cross between the BB and a Jayhawk. Sorry no photos as it was trashed before digital cameras became cheap. :(

I got the full series on DVD last year. I still thouroughly enjoyed watching the episodes.

Does anyone remember that funny looking spaceship from "Battle Beyond The Stars (I believe)"? Piloted by John Boy Walton and it looked like it was constructed from the upper half of a female mannequin?

Anyway, favorite model rocket? I have been very fond of the USS Andromeda for a long time. I have been working on a model with a similar feel to it for a couple of weeks now.

Favorite REAL rocket, Saturn 1-B. It is just so graceful!!! It really looks like the designers paid attention to aesthetics when designing that one!

Favorite Sci-Fi, well, being that I like the deep space probe look, I would have to second Jim's vote for the Discovery from 2001/2010. It just had such a mean haunting look to it. Sort of like an angry blow-pop.
