I notice the Ascender is in the catalog too. This hasn't been available for awhile now. I wonder if it's really coming back'

Looking forward to the Doorknob. I wonder if it will have plastic fins???

I was a flight doc at Altus OK, which was at that time a C5 training base (I was actually a SAC flight surgeon for the tanker tenant wing.). In any case, I got to see the C5 during refueling from both vantage points, the KC-135 passing the gas, and the C5 receiving the gas. The C5 cargo bay is an impressive amount of space.

lots of cool new rockets this year!

Reading through all the descriptions of the new kits on the Estes website (they’re on the “Coming Soon” page) I’m thinking yes, the Doorknob fins are plastic. But Estes describes it as a “builder” kit so it’s not going to be like the E2X PSII kits, evidently. The release date for the Doorknob is this spring so I guess we’ll have to wait and see - it’s definitely on my buy list!

I think FSI sold a 21mm C4 motor that worked just fine. [OT] C4 is a HE, but reportedly it will also burn slowly at low pressures.

Regardless of NFPA codes, manufacturers tend to label their motors for marketing and product differentiation purposes.

    From the Estes Doorknob page:

WHAT YOU NEED TO BUILD: Scissors, pencil, ruler, fine sandpaper, epoxy, yellow glue, sanding block, hobby knife, masking tape, primer (white), paint (black, day glow orange, white) and clear coat (optional). Tools, construction and finishing supplies not included.

I didn't see mention of plastic cement so hopefully the fins are ply...or at least balsa.

The Door Knob fins are 1/8" thick balsa.

I'm sad they discontinued Little Joe II. I was hoping for more scale models, not less.

But the LJ II has been around for a while now so I imagine most everybody wanting one has it by now. They are still available at 2 of our LHS here too so not like it will disappear quickly.

I am glad to see much more narrative in the catalog, they tell some good stories about each collection of rockets. Makes it almost like a magazine and sparks the imagination of rocketeers young and old alike, like the catalogs from the good old days. Almost like these are the good old days. Someone should write a song about that.

i got my paper copy today. Kits that seem gone besides the previously mentioned Little Joe II: Dazzler, extreme 12, Galaxy Glow, fractured, flying colors, Magician, Rookie, Zinger
Also why aren't diameters in there any more? Maybe because some the space corp stuff is odd?

Not sure why that info was left out of the catalog but the diameters and construction materials are on the website.

Got my catalog today. Reminds me of the old catalogs. Really liked the back-stories on the different series.

When are the "new" Estes kits normally available for sale? It seems that they are trickling out, but has Estes established an historical pattern where the new kits are released on X date?

I’ve been a BAR since 2006 and in my experience the answer is “no”. It’s a slow boat from Guangzhou. We wait and watch.

New kits arrive all year long. Typically X amount of kits arrive each quarter during teach month. There will be in fact more kits arriving this year that have not been shown yet in the Estes catalog, which it typically what happens every year.
