I have my sons involved in the CMP youth program and they use bolt actioin rifle for target shooting, but I wanted them to have a little fun too, so I modified a Ruger 10/22 rifle for them to use for plinking. It is 32.5 inches long and weighs 4.5 pounds empty, significantly smaller than origanal.

Closeup of the buttstock. Next time I will use a darker stain. It has six hand rubbed coats of tung oil. The butt pad is actually 1/4 inch Sig plywood. It is really there to protect the toe of the buttstock. That area is subject to fracture due to the lay of the grain, and the plywood is rigid enough to protect from a blow that would otherwise crack the stock in that area. I am going to put skateboard friction tape on the end.

Time to get back to building rockets! :p
