Hi All,

I've build a bigger and not so great rocket this year. (DiaLFonZo - BeG or Staples Rocket - Build) Mostly to play around available materials during a weekend which ended up using a shipping tube (heavy) and 3D printed parts. Rocket became a land dart (as expected after sim) but the overall look interest me so i made that little one last week.

Originally named "Dart" but got a message from @cwbullet for the files and he refer to it as "Baby Dart" and i liked it so ... Baby Dart it is.

Today i'm printing a revised version with slight tolerance changes in the design than i will be uploading the STL's here and on Thingiverse. If anybody need the STEP let me know.

Specs
  • 400mm length (but can be adjusted with the addition of more body tubes)
  • 18mm friction fit motor mount
  • Integrated rod sliders
  • 3 fin design (could be changed easily if one need it)
Print
  • Up Mini V1
  • Print in the image orientation, no support material
  • Higher resolution the better but i've made mine 0.25mm for speed (~3h)

Not so great print this morning.
I had changed the wall thickness from 1mm to 0.75mm and it printed awful.. :(

More corrections and another print.. ;)

I've made some tolerance adjustments as well as an added internal part to hold the shock cord as well as single part nosecone.

For some reasons this forum do not allows for multiple modifications of a post so i cannot update the first post anymore, this is very very annoying...

I did an OpenRocket sim and the build would be a lot more happy with 3 section in the middle rather than 2.

would you be opposed to making the tube diameter a hair wider to accommodate an older style of twist lock retention that some of the older estes models have? let me dig through my stuff and ill snap some pics for you.

It can be looked for sure - I can add something at the end similar to what i did here:

Here are those pics, they are from the estes amazon.

I like what you have there too, does it throw your weight off too much?

I do have one with that system here (Amazon) and it work fine.
However it will require quite a larger body than what's currently used. Let me have a look.

I don't have a printer, i was just curious as to your thoughts on it if you were gonna experiment in the future. i really like your design and i am hoping to see a successful flight for you.

The biggest issue is the size and thickness of the tube. I have an idea but don't know if it will be possible. I'll update once I have try.

Here is the bottom with a B6-4lIMG_20191222_123545.jpgIMG_20191222_123536.jpg

ok, it looks great, im sure there will be others that are far more knowledgeable that will give some input. I have yet to really tinker with open rocket or rocksim yet, To darn many house projects going on for me to do and theorycrafting of my own. ive been building kits just to get that craving out. lol.

First coat and light sand

That was a print test to see rigidity and accuracy of the print.
Initially wanted a clip effect at the end but I don't think it worth pursuing.

I'll leave it friction for this build [emoji53]

Second coat of primer, i'm not happy yet of the finish.
Clearly some 3D print marks are still visible.

Missing one tube length but you get the idea.. What's nice is you can get any fins you like.

Options:
1. add 1/4 inch or so of base tube extending below fin terminus to allow a tape retention a la competition standard practice.
2. make a small hole in the tube along a fin for an Estes standard retention clip and use 5 min epoxy and a strip of thin fiberglass cloth to hold in place.

something to consider.
