Watching this periscope film on the V2 on Youtube just now, where they launch it at White Sands in NM, what was interesting to me was realizing that the V2 goes too slow for the first 2 seconds of flight for the Fins on it to have any effect. Given that it has no launch tower (it just lifts off on it's own, no guide rail), I can only assume that for the first few seconds of flight, it's using the carbon vanes in the exhaust plume to stay stable until such time that the fins become effective. As the engine doesn't gimble, it's using "thrust vectoring" essentially, to keep itself from flipping over. At least, that's what I think is happening.
