Foam copper pipe insulation works great. It isn't even budged by the ejection g-forces since it's so low in mass:

That reminds me. Since you need to buy a (still very cheap) piece of insulation one heck of a lot longer than you need for this, cut up a bunch of them up (serrated steak knife works great) and give them out at launches to anyone with or planning to get an Estes or Jolly Logic altimeter.

You can also tape it around the shock cord for antizipper protection.

If you have any insulation left over, you can use it to protect your 24mm and 29mm cases. Just cut lengths about 1" longer than your cases, and wrap them around.
