I thought I saw mention of this idea somewhere, but can't find it. Perhaps I dreamed it?

Has anyone considered using a cluster that hits apogee with, say, a 3 sec. delay? One motor has a 3 sec delay and its ejection charge just breaks the rocket in two.... the second (or 3rd/4th/5th... :D ) has a longer delay, say. 7 sec. with a chute packed in the top of its tube. Rather like a parachute cannon.

If one of those engines didn't light.... heh heh heh.

I thought of useing different delays in a cluster as a sort of "back-up ejection system.

First the 3 then the 5 then at the last moment the 7 second.

One of them is bound to kick the chute out!
