I saw this on facebook, a beautiful goony by Rob Caswell based on an original Estes drawing that never went into production, but became the missle toe which was a bit more politically correct I suppose....His is based on a mini fat boy like all goonies should...

I just thought it was the greatest thing ever, satisfies my Buzzbomb need, goony need, and R/C glider need with proper modifications....here goes...33" long, 2.6" diameter 23" wingspan, 10 oz rtf unpainted, maybe 10.5 painted with decals for E-6's Rob kindly sent me his decals and I tweaked them for the glider usage, brilliant.

Rob did them himself on waterslide material, he said it was a mix of Der Red Max, and online screen grabs he re-worked for this model.

I then trimmed out a few and upsized the crosses for my wings etc to give to stickershock to make cut vinyl for me.

Beautiful, who did the decals?

Here she is after glide tests. CG was a tad further forward than I estimated 2 3/8 from the le instrad of 2.64 probably due to the long fuse. Looks like it should be 9.5 Oz ready to fly unpainted and a little over 10 with paint and decals.

Another inspiring design!

Curious, what are you doing for yaw control? I don't see any sign of ailerons on the wings, nor does the vertical stab appear to have a hinge for a rudder. Are you mixing the horizontal tail surfaces to serve as elevons?

yes, effectively elevons is what I use for almost everything even if they are on the wing or on tail surfaces, radio does the mixing, since I take off vertically and can land into the wind however I want, I don't need yaw control. Simplifies to just two servos and I don't have to do complex linkages to tie elevator halves together or aileron linkages...

You would think it wouldn't give you sufficient roll control but I've never had one that didn't work better than I thought it would.

I may see if Ken has anymore 5.5 inch cones and make an upscale.

Buzz bomb needs are so difficult to satisfy! :)

Wow - I'm in awe of how incredibly fast you work, Frank! My build had barely tickled your brain less than 24 hours ago!

A few clarifications: I used a Mini Fat Boy as the basic starting point as it has a 13mm mount, like the original Goonies. I grabbed basic logos (VW and the Iron Crosses for the wings) off stock imagery and the skull and crossbones are from the Estes Red Max art. The rest I created myself in Photoshop and then printed on (Micro Mark) waterslide sheet.

This was just sort of a quick, fun side project for me so I'm tickled at how much it seems to be resonating with folks!

If anyone's curious... or even better, wants to take on a build... here's the original drawings which were posted on YORF by Al Packer. I know Semroc did the Baka Bomb version as a kit, but I'm not sure the others ever got any commercial treatment. I particularly like the Sopwith!

Did 5 flights this morning, first couple were a little tail heavy and a little too much elevator throw so were twitchy in pitch. Finally got it trimmed well enough to paint.

WILD, Frank! She's a pretty nice glider! Came in real smooth on landing, too. Impressive! I'm still blown away that you had it built and flying in under 24 hours 😲

Things that really speed up these types of RC RGs builds is the fact that there is no spiral filling, very little sanding, no airfoiling, no water or solvent based adhesives and often little or no painting…..:)

Aack my horrible secret is out😁

Pretty straight forward, move stab to top of tube, add fin tips, taper wing front and back slightly, add cockpit....rest should be the same, not sure if it would have the same goony feel but do-able...Might be a bit lighter without the body tube pulse jet at the rear not needing as much nose weight. The stock Baka had a very far forward wing as the nose was basically the front of a torpedo....lots of nose weight built in.

Frank, have you started the upscale Gooney Baka Bomb yet?????…..:)
