I was browsing through the clearance aisles at Michael's & came across some pretty good rockets buys. They had 4 Big Daddys marked down to $12.00 & a Nightwing marked down to $5.00. I picked up one of the Big Daddys, but I already have a Nightwing that I haven't completed.

I'll probably just modify this BD so I can fly Estes E & AT 24mm Fs. If I pick up the others, I may try some clusters or a 29mm mount. I like the Baby Bertha & Fat Boy, so this should fit in well. :)

Just a reminder to check those clearance aisles at Michael's. In the store here, they are on the opposite side of the store from where the rockets are.

Well, this always works for me in stores like Micheal's, Joanne's Fabric and the like. I don't know why...I was never really good at getting dates when I was younger... but... maybe 'cause I'm married.

I flirt my friggin' brains out in these places!!!

I have managed to use a 40% off coupon WITH a purchase from there clearance bin!

I think it's places that deal primarily with women...it's just so unusual for a man to shop there...flirting works!

Just my personal observation.

My wife thinks it's funny!

Before I will flirt with them, they at least have to be flirt-able.

Automatic non-flirtablility: Morbidly overweight, speaking in ghetto-ese, tattoos, inability to count proper change without the cash register doing it for them.

That just about rules out all the people I have seen at checkout counters.

Actually, I was pleasantly surprised when I got ready to checkout. An attractive young blond opened up another register so I wouldn't have to wait. I commented to her that "I knew if I looked around long enough, I'd finally find something in the clearance racks". She smiled.

One advantage of being 50 is that I can be nice to young girls & they are not concerned about me having ulterior motives. :)

Ouch.

Oh well, it keeps me out of trouble.

BTW, how do I get the 'veteran' out of my TRF label?

Goto 'Profile' at the top of this page , then when that window comes up , goto 'Edit-Profile' , and you should see the option to change your 'title' there.

I'm 55 and Italian...that does not apply to me!

I took your advice and got a couple of Big Daddy's on clearance today. I tried the flirting thing... didn't work.... maybe I'm losing my touch, or maybe the GUY at the register had heard it all before!!

jesus christ is everybody on these forums a senior citizen;)

JoJo,

Jesus is a great friend of mine. I take it that he is a friend of yours, too, since you are including Him in this discussion?

JoJo, Just think, you might have more than 1000 years of combined rocketry experience from all the old fellows to glean information from. :) I think it kind of amazes some people that I still pursue a hobby I've have since I was a teenager, back in the 60s.

I just finished putting together, one of the Big Daddys I got on clearance at Michael's(checked yesterday, 3 left :) )

I have not put in the parachute, but I weighed the rocket this morning & w/o an engine it weighs 7oz. On the bag it says it weighs 5.3 oz..

The only thing I did was use Elmer's Carpenter's Wood Filler on the fins & replaced the shock cord w/one about 4' long. I don't think this would add 1.7 oz. to the weight.

Has anyone else noticed that their Big Daddy weighs a bit more than stated on the package?

I am sooo HACKED at myself, I saw the same deal on 3 or 4 Big Daddys at one of the Michael's here in Houston when I first started back into this Hobby about 2 months ago. Didn't realize at the time what a great deal it was. By the time I realized it, they were gone!!! :( Now I can't even find Big Daddys at all except at a Hobby store with outrageous prices, and this is supposed to be a "Discount Hobby store"

Big Daddys are realy expensive at the moment , proberley due the demand on that particular kit. But I suppose it's worth the price !
-Karl

I don't mind spending the $12.00. It's certainly not worth $25.00 to me. To be honest, if I didn't get the Estes & Quest rockets at significant discounts at HL & Michael's, I'd be buying far less rockets. Some of the prices are obscene; particularly on the Estes rockets. JMO

When these kits are on sale at half-price, I feel that is about the right price that they should have been sold at in the first place. And even then, some of them are still kinda high---

Go ahead, just call me a cheapskate!

The newer kits, being made in China, are WAY cheaper than the older kits. The price of the BLU-97B and CC-Express are prime examples. Much more complicated kits with lots more parts than older kits selling for more than twice the price.

Both are great fliers, by the way.

I hope the midpower stuff drops as much in price as the low-power stuff has in the next go-round.

No ulterior motives? That's what Viagra is for...

:D :kill:

I absolutely must not set foot in a Michael's. I already have 2 Big Daddy kits. The *only* reason I'll go there now is for Blast-Off Flight Packs.

Eugene, How are you planning to build the Big Daddys?

The first will definitely be built stock. I figure I can still fly it on E11s up to E23s. The other might be one of those crazy projects where I put a lot of motors in it. Either way, I've got tons of kits piled high in my closet. I really just need to stay away from Michael's. I'm also a sucker for "The Launch Pad" kits.

I also scored a Big Daddy for $12 at Michaels just earlier this week. I plan on modifying it for a 29mm mount. My planned mods are:
  • 1.5oz Glassed balsa fins, trimmed to length.
  • 1/4" birch ply CR's (hey, it's all I gots around)
  • Tubular Nylon Shock cord
  • Nose weight as needed
  • Rail Buttons

It should be light enough that I'll be able to fly it on an Apogee F10 (droool) up to a G40 (wheee). I'll probably put a F22 Blackjack in her/him/it at some point - that'll be cool!

Does anyone have any recommendations on using the 2-part expanding foam in the NC to secure the nose weight? I've heard of putting the nose in a bowl of ice water, but wouldn't that mess up the reaction of the foam, since it use heat (exothermic) to cure?

Maybe I should start another thread...

BTW, this'll be my third Big Daddy! :D :D

Jetra-

I personally used a full pump of West systems slow to secure a full ounce of BB's into the nose of my Big Daddy. It flys AWESOME on AT SU F21 EJ's! I used the water cooling for this and it worked great!

I just built a big daddy. I added a red stripe to the nose cone right below the yellow tip. looks nice. I decided to do this because if you look at the decals, wherever there is yellow, there is red. i thought it was nice to copy that on the nosecone.

I built and flew my Michaels scored Big Daddy last week at the club launch.... I think the Flor. Orange Krylon came out looking great. the pic doesnt give justice as to how bright the thing came out.

the yellow on the stickers doesnt look to bad with the orange either.

That krylon florescent paint leaves a really lousy finish... so it definately requires some 220 grit lovin between coats.. but it finishes off fairly well if you go with light even coats and take your time so there arent runs.

yea... the local craft store... HL carries the E-9's here, $14.95 per 2 pack ouch... waiting on the 40% off coupon that runs weekly to pick some up though..

I have a shipment of Econojet E-30-7 engines coming in soon.. Red Arrow said they shipped last Monday, so they should be in any time soon... thinking on a way to drill out that engine block

might save one for the V-2 i'm gonna start on next week... who knows..

Ouch , I dont think you need to take the engine block out ! Doesn't the Big Daddy come with the Engine Hook ? Well mine did! Im sure you could get away with just putting a E in there ! Rocksim it first though to check CP/CG! Those E's are awesome but the price lets you down alot!
