Neil Weinstock suggested I add avatars to ThrustCurve.org, since that's a pretty common practice for web sites that have a login. I could add image upload to the contributor profile or use a standard service like Gravatar.
 
I believe some sites will allow you to upload your own avatar, but in the absence of one will attempt to pull from Gravatar or whatever. That's why I voted for Gravatar: an easier first step, and then in the future you could (if desired) add the additional capability of uploading a custom avatar, which seems to me like more effort for both you and the user.
 
OK, I integrated Gravatar for avatar icons. This is a minor point since there is not much user interaction on the site itself, but at least it makes it more consistent with other sites.

I'm sorry there wasn't more interest in dynamically generated avatars. I came up with one inspired by the Gary Larson cartoon:
