Great episode of "The Rocketry Show" podcast featuring Ken Biba and ARLISS. Highly recommend listening if you're interested in building your own sounding rocket and doing research during your flights.

The Rocketry Show Podcast Episode 90B

During the podcast Ken mentioned that many clubs are flying the same telemetry package and sensors that students at flying at Black Rock during ARLISS. Not certain if these are available as kits or assembled? Instructions, etc. Does anyone know or have links?

Using either 2.4 or 5.8 GHz for telemetry makes a lot of sense. Not the least of which is that skew planar and "cloverleaf" antennas with circular polarization are cheap and readily available due to their popularity with drone pilots.

Circular polarization overcomes a lot of the issues that we experience with tumbling airframes and other in-flight reception issues. And the size works best for rocketry too.

Anyone know if the telemetry and sensor packages are available commercially?

Great content, and fascinating stuff. In the late 60's and early 70's, many thought that the future of the hobby lay in telemetry. Devices like the Foxmitter or Transrock from Estes dominated the covers of hobby publications and many articles were written. But costs were high, and equipment bulky--it never really caught on.

Today, telemetry is more affordable, lightweight and capable than ever before. The dream of being able to build and fly our own real sounding rockets is possible.
