ARLISS is now 20 years old and is the oldest, and original CanSat program in the world.

It is a unique combination of international student satellites of CubeSat or PocketQube size integrated and flown on highly skilled fliers in the Black Rock Desert of Northern Nevada.

The premier competition is for ARLISS Classic - coffee can/CubeSat sized autonomous robots launched on a standard 6" ARLISS M airframe (standard motor is an AeroTech M1419) to about 10k' AGL at Black Rock ... deployed and then each satellite needs to find its way to a set of GPS coordinates as the goal - by crawling, flying, hovering and beaming itself over. The closest to the goal is the winner. The 2019 winner was a team from Japan that used machine learning with sensor fusion to exactly touch the goal after a journey of several kilometers over the playa floor.

In addition to ARLISS Classic - ARLISS has created a number of projects over the years including:
  • ARLISS Classic using K and M high powered airframes
  • ARLISS Extreme - pioneering amateur two-stage sounding rocket technology reaching 104k' AGL, full recovered, on commercial motors in 2012. Winning the Carmack Prize, the NAR President's Prize and now housed in the Seattle Museum of Flight.
  • Instrumented Carrier - a program from 2014 that instrumented ARLISS M payload carriers with high frequency acceleration and rotation data loggers to document the flight experience of student payloads.
  • S4 - Small Satellites for Secondary Students - originally a NASA funded project to bring the ARLISS experience to middle and high school students - now creating an open source platform of PocketQube compatible satellites using Arduino, many modern sensors, and LoRa wireless telemetry to create satellites that can be launched in a local park, on ARLISS Classic or on a new range of 3D printed ARLISS Lite airframes.
  • ARLISS Lite - a family of (largely) 3D printed airframes that can fly S4 PocketQube satellites on E thru K motors from 1000' to 10k' AGL - bringing ARLISS to a greater community.
