Am watching 'man on the moon' on YouTube. I was always under the impression that death within the capsule was fairly quick. But in this special it was described that an oxygen tube broke lose and was whipping around the capsule, nearly decapitating one of the crewmen. Then the 'witness' said 'it was a horrible 90 seconds before the crewmen lost consciousness' . I gotta say that, looking at pictures of the burned suits of the crewmen, that this 'theory' makes a lot of sense.

Why not toss us a link, or (better... no ads) post the video here so we can all see the documentary you're talking about.

From what I have read that account is not correct, at least the part of near decapitation. From what I have read (possibly from Barbree's book), the bodies of the crew were fairly intact and didn't have signs of great trauma. Also, I don't think that the hoses would have that much mass, velocity, and pressure to do that kind of damage (but I'm not an ECS expert, so take that for what it's worth). The enclosed capsule endured an incredible amount of heat internal pressure as the fire flashed. I'm thinking that the loss of consciousness came way before 90 seconds. Regardless if it were 9 seconds or 90, it was horrible.

We were at the dinner table when the news broke...remember how shocked everyone was, the program had been going all too well.
When they finally got the hatch open one guy thought they were gone - as everything was coated I black ash,...he couldn't make out bodies. Then he saw a glowing ember and called the fire crew back over....thinking the fire was still burning.
It was a warning light on the control panel.

That fire was a weird thing - I recall seeing pictures where a clipboard inside the command module capsule with papers on it was only partially burned.

I hadn't seen this picture until fairly recently. Komarov's remains. And what was left after Soyuz 1 impacted.
Space program.......rather unforgiving of errors.
