I finally got around to building and finishing my SHX-15B. The body tube was creased but in the end it was hidden inside the body shrouds. The directions and patterns and just about everything else made this kit almost like a "scratch-build"...but in the end it makes a nice looking kit. The decals do not seem to be usuable...they just crack up and disintegrate....so I wish someone else like ASTRONBOY can come up with some good decals. I would like to have some SHROX ones, but even some NASA-type would work.:(

It looks great Bill...

Bummer about the decals though. Did you coat them with anything? (Future or Decal Solution?)

Gloss black is not very forgiving...yours looks flawless!

VERY NICE!

I had trouble with my decals initially too. If you got thru the <a href="https://rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8656&highlight=SHX15b">original SHX-15B thread</a> shrox
suggests coating the decal sheet before use. I used the Testor's decal spray from a
kit I had on hand. I suppose just about any clear coat would work.

When are you going to fly her?

Thanks for the comments guys. Both of your X-15s are very sharp. I will try to work with the decals I have left....I just don't like decals that you have to "doctor" before use!! I still want some others if they are available!:)

I don't think I put the krylon clear coat on thick enough, or a set might have gone out uncoated.

Yes, it beat one record, and even that one was just barely beaten. It went 377,000, the X-15 went 354,000. Also, it hit mach 3, the X-15 hit mach 6.5+. Also, the X-15 had design goals of Mach 8 and 400000 feet, but the project was discontinued before they were reached.

I just could not get the supplied decals to work. The SHROX tail fin decals came out alright...but the insignias and USAF had black backgrounds that just took away from the lines of the rocket. I used some decals left from other projects and used individual stick-on letters for USAF and US AIRFORCE and even though some are OVERSIZED...from a distance on a launch pad they might look alright.

The SHX-15B is very much a head turner at launches! I
can't believe all the comments I got at NARAM-46.

Great job!
