another old book rocket

Though the cover art doesn't match the description in the book, I thought to
give it a try. Kind of reminds me of the Trident. And I do have all those left
over Lg ping pong balls.

BT55 main body
3 BT5 side tubes
Little bits o' BT20
various nose cones
Small piece of BT50
2 54mm PPB

Build the top. Just put together a stepped top from BT20 to BT55.

Put a nozzle on the 18mm (BT20) motor mount.
Cut two 18mm holes in one of the ppb, and a single hole in the last ppb.
**WARNING** Glue a balsa block at the top of the 18mm motor mount. You
DON'T want the ejection gasses to hit the Ping Pong Ball. Glue the two hole
PPB onto the motor mount.

Drill three 3/16 inch holes on the BT55. Glue a plug just under the holes. This
reduces the volume of the upper tube, and it stops the parachute from slipping
under the ejection holes. Glue a piece of PPB to cap the end of the BT55.

Glue the second, one hole, PPB on the motor mount. Line up your fin guides.
(You did put some fin guide on the PPBs, didn't you?)

Glue small pieces of 3/16 inch launch lugs into the holes drilled on the BT55.
I like to tape things together to see how it's starting to look. :blush:

Wrap some sand paper around a spent 13mm motor, and use it to sand out a
groove on the upper PPB for the BT5 ejection struts.
Drill 3 3/16 inch holes at the top of the motor mount.

Glue little pieces of 3/16 in LL into the top of the motor mount. Drill 3/16 inch
holes into the bottom of the BT5. Using the Guide lines on the BT55, glue the
top of the BT5 onto the BT55, tape in place. Make sure the BT5 is straight.
Place the BT5 in the slot sanded into the PPB. Draw around the PPB on the
BT5, this is a glue guide. I smeared wood glue around the 3/16 LL "pegs",
and "gap filler" med CA on the PPBs. Glue the Motor mount assembly onto
the BT5 tubes.

I wanted to hide the launch lugs so I put them inside the Ping Pong Balls.
Carefully drill an 1/8 inch hole in the bottom most PPB. Using the Long Launch
Lug,(FLISKITS), slide the LL up to the top of the PPB. Mark, and cut this hole.
Do one hole at a time, sliding the LL up as you go. I find this easier than
trying to line up the holes afterward. 5 min epoxy to hold it all together.

Almost done.
Already looking at "another old book rocket". Been doing some reading lately.

Trim out the extra bits of launch lug, and sand down to the PPB.

Add the smaller upper fins.

The cover art shows these itty bitty rear fins. With the motor sticking so far
back from where the fins are placed, I made them much bigger. The sweep I
added should also move the C.P. back slightly.

Now to wait for some good weather to sneek the painting in.
