Those of you who read/follow my threads - get a life! LOL. :D:D
You are familiar that my wife goes on vacation and leaves me alone in the house for a week - Never a good idea.........
I will generally take that week off and go on a building binge - SOOOooooo.....

I am working on an Estes USS Atlantis, the Sirius USS Atlantis Refit, and a Squirrel Works Deep Space Research Vessel Gartrell rocket. I am also trying to squeeze in building a BT80 based clone of the Gemini Titan using the Accur8 skins and Space Ways capsule and interstage assembly.

For the 3 kits, the obligatory part shots - may I present...The Gartrell, Estes Atlantis, and Sirius Atlantis

    IMG_3894.jpg IMG_3882.jpg IMG_3881.jpg

Just an FYI - this started Thursday and I am just catching up and starting the thread - sorry

Built the motor mounts for all 3. Realized I missed taking a picture of the Sirius mount. Longer than the Estes and Squirrel mounts. The Sirius mount is about 10" long and has 3 centering rings

    IMG_3898.jpg IMG_3896.jpg

The Estes Atlantis was not a collectors kit - it was made for building. Almost all of the balsa pieces were out. In fact, most of the remainder of the balsa "frame" was just pieces.
Also, the main tube had several areas of damage so I replaced it.

I built up the Bridge Deck. I will paper the exposed side after this dries.

The Sirius wood is a plywood. With its tighter grain I felt I could get by with just a light skim of F&F. I did this while all of the pieces were together.

*** WARNING *** Do NOT Attempt this at home!!*

*that is, if your wife is at home

I made use of the kitchen island and the iron pans to ensure the unit would not warp while drying

    IMG_3901.jpg

And the pieces punched out after it dried

While this was drying I tried something new. I papered the entire balsa sheet on one side and let it dry under weights. One that side was dry I use a blade from the un-papered side to cut through the paper - but not enough to remove the parts. Then I papered the other side. It took some time (wait for the glue to dry) but the Gartrell has 14 pieces, some quite small.
    No pix here though.

I also almost mixed up the cones from the Gartrell and the Sirius Atlantis, so I skipped ahead and glued the transition and cone to the upper body tube for the Gartrell.

The Sirius Atlantis has TTT mounting for the pod arms, so I cut the slot per the template

    IMG_3900.jpg

And then attached the sole fin

    IMG_3902.jpg

While this was drying, there are 2 tubes that mount inside the pods for the Sirius rocket. These have to be glued together. More kitchen use....

I was going to attach the side decking when I realized it would become very difficult to paint after assembly. No way a rattle can will spray without running. I'm just holding things in place with my hand. So I'm putting this to the side until I can get some paint.

    IMG_3906.jpg

So then I attached the first fin for the Gartrell. I am NOT following the instructions at this point. The instructions have you mount the 8 ring supports first, then the main fins.
I'm doing the main fins first.

Added all of the main fins to the Gartrell. Then used some guides and clamps for the ring supports

For the Sirius Atlantis, I masked where glue would be needed

    IMG_3911.jpg IMG_3910.jpg

    And started priming

So all of the fins and supports are on the Gartrell - looks more like a tree...

    IMG_3915.jpg

And what about the Estes Atlantis??? The wood edges are chipped badly and need some F&F

For the Sirius Atlantis, got it primed. Various areas need touchup.

    IMG_3918.jpg

Also realized I had a DUH moment. Should have installed the dowels first. Well, need to do more priming after the touchup so might was well get them on.
BTW - back to real time mode

    Finally done....

    IMG_3922.jpg IMG_3921.jpg IMG_3920.jpg

We now return to the build thread in progress
    Thank you

Cut out parts of the Accur8 skins and used it to size the tubes. The one was too short. So I was thinking of using a coupler, but decided to check my stash. Found an appropriate sized one.

Found an issue with the Gartrell - the body tube is splitting at a spiral. Decided to reinforce the inside and a little CA on the outside

Pre-painting the Sirius Atlantis. It calls for a light grey. It almost is the same color as the primer. Can you tell which is which?

Started adding dowels to the Estes Atlantis. Did mess up and put one set on in the wrong place. Had to cut it off and try again.

Almost forgot about the launch lug on the Gartrell. Scrapped away some of the primer and glued the lug on a stand off

GT - painted inside of the interstage coupler. Then masked the outside and painted everything white. The main purpose is to have a nice gloss finish for the vinyl to grab onto.

Estes Atlantis - mounted the bridge. Afterwards I noticed from the rear it is not centered. Issue seems to be the one pylon is off - probably from when I was trying to fix the dowel location. Not really noticeable (from a distance).

    IMG_3947.jpg View attachment 364321

Then started adding all of the rest of the dowels and cardboard detail bits.

Sirius Atlantis - pulled off the masking stripes so I can glue on the "decks". Also realized I have not installed the "antenna dish - and now I can't find the part. Will do some more looking but if push comes to shove the antenna is non-structural and I can cut one from balsa

OK - Wife is due home tonight (late). Need to hide the evidence and clean up!

The GT is in my paint area drying. Did a group shot of the other 3.

    Status -
Gartrell - needs a final paint coat + decals
Estes Atlantis - basically done - needs prime/paint/decal, but construction is complete (although will probably clean up some fillets)
Sirius Atlantis - need to make a new antenna. Finish the pods, mount the bridge, mount the pods, cleanup, paint
Gemini Titan - paint top of capsule black, build up motor mount, assemble, skin

    IMG_3958.jpg

Not bad for a week of work.......

Looking excellent. I really dig all the little details on the Atlantises (Atlanti?)

What's your method for painting the interior of the rings on the Gartrell?
