I did a number of "experimental" flights today, hoping to work out the bugs before embarrassing myself at Sodblaster. But this flight was supposed to be just for the fun of it. Alas.

Most of the time a CATO is a CATO. A drag, but that’s that. But today’s was a serious bummer. While it was certainly spectacular, it destroyed my favorite rocket, my long suffering NewWay Quadzilla. These are no longer made and are pretty much irreplaceable, as NewWay can’t get the high quality square tubes they need.

On the other hand, it was a stunning CATO! The video doesn’t really capture the intensity of the noise. The metal clip I was using as a stand-off was destroyed, a clothes pin was yeeted to unknown territory. There were pieces of tube and fins scattered around the field, but I did recover a couple of pieces of the nozzle.
In the end I was left with a steaming (literally) pile of rubble. You bet I’ll be reporting it to Estes and the MESS database.
And if anyone has a Quadzilla kit for sale, please let me know! (I know, I know, this isn’t the right place for buy/sell/trade, just let me mourn for a bit.)

What motor? E12?

Hans.

It's been several days since Sodblaster and I'm itching to launch.

I'm looking at Saturday the 7th, as there may be soccer on Sunday the 8th. But I could be wrong on both counts. I could do mid-afternoon on Monday and Tuesday is open, but it looks like we may have rain by then.

So my plan is attempt to launch on Saturday and then see what happens.

I'll keep you posted here, but let me know if you think you might be able to join me on one of those days.

Looking for a good laugh?

I’ll be on the eastside anyway on Monday the 16th, so around noon I plan to go to 60 Acres to try to recover at least one of my rockets from the rocket-eating-tree. And, well, since I’m there, I may as well launch some rockets.

My 3rd flight and my 2nd to last flight both went into the same tree. F*cker.
I’m going to put together my super-pole and see if I can reach these suckers!

Ken

On the off chance anyone cares...

Here’s a link to my photos and videos from Sodblaster VI over Labor Day weekend. Obviously these are focused on my rockets and the group project, but there are a few others here and there. Also, misc. other pics that have nothing to do with rockets.

Feel free to download and share any you wish and to add your own. And feel free to ignore.

Took me long enough.

Really glad I flew on Tuesday. The weather was perfect, virtually no wind, and quite hot! I had some great flights and one tragic crash where a C11-3 ejection charge failed and destroyed my 2x Quick Fly glider that had flown so well at Sodblaster. Not many pics or videos though. And who knows when the weather will be nice again?

I flew the Decaffeinater with a CHAD stages E12-0 and if flew great, but I forgot to hit the record button, so no video. I did get a nice onboard video on my Mega Mosquito and will post a link once I have it uploaded to Youtube.

I’m gonna be on the east side tomorrow, Wednesday. Oct 2nd, so I think I’ll show up at 60 acres about 1 or 130 and see if we get lucky with the wind. Soccer kids will probably be there by 4:15 so that gives us maybe a three hour window.

See you there if you can make it!

WAC SWAP MEET
Note: open to everyone, RSVP is appreciated, see details below.
Dear Washington Aerospace Club Members and Families,

We’re thrilled to announce a fun new event for the WAC community—our first-ever Potluck & Swap Meet! It’s going to be a fantastic opportunity to come together, enjoy some delicious food, and share our love of rocketry in a relaxed, family-friendly setting.

When: Sunday October 6th from 1pm to 7pm
Where: 14627 160th Ave SE, Renton, WA 98059
What’s Happening:
Potluck: Bring your favorite dish or drink to share! Please include a note about any common allergens or preferences (like nuts, dairy, gluten, or vegetarianism).
Swap Meet: Got extra rocketry parts, kits, or gear collecting dust? Bring them along to sell, trade, or give away! This is a great chance to pass along items you no longer need and maybe pick up something new for your next project.
Outdoor Fun: We’ll have BBQ on the grill, plus outdoor games.
This is a wonderful chance to meet fellow rocket enthusiasts, share your knowledge, and enjoy some good company in the process. Whether you're new to the hobby or a seasoned pro, we’d love to see you there.

Please help us out by letting us know you are coming so that I can plan ahead for food/tables/chairs/etc and also let us know what food or drink you plan to bring, that would be cool. Please fill out the survey: here to RSVP and tell us what food you plan to bring

If you want to share a sneak peek of what you are bringing to the Swap Meet, send that to the list at [email protected]. Feel free to invite friends and family to join the fun!

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Bryce Chanes
WAC President

That swap meet idea is interesting.

I was up at Sixty Acres yesterday. Lovely flying conditions, but as you say soccer takes over after school. I think it was pretty well overrun by 4:30 or so.

Tomorrow's weather looks pretty good. I'll have to think about that. I didn't quite get all the B motor comparison flights in that I wanted to do yesterday.

I managed to sell or give away more rockets than I acquired at the WAC swap meet today, but the ones I did get – well, they are doozies! I’m looking at this coming Thursday afternoon to test them out, plus more more more! I also picked up a nice stash of non-recalled D12 engines, which are just right for a variety of my rockets.

It’s early, of course, but the weather looks pretty good on Thursday. Let me know if interested and I’ll keep you informed.

Just two hints: Monocopter and Gyroscope!

See you Thursday!

I am planning to fly tomorrow, Thursday. The weekend weather looks even better, but I’ve given up trying to guess whether they are playing soccer there over the weekend. I plan to be there by noon tomorrow earlier if I can manage it.
As it happens, an old friend has a child who plays for Crossfire Select and will let me know when they wrap up weekend practices/games for the season. I'll let you all know.
