Anyone know where I can beg, borrow, steel, or buy a HPR fin-jig. I am making a minimum diameter 75mm Onyx and it's time to mount the fins back on. So far I have a nice round tube and I need to get 3 fins attached to it.

Cut one from Masonite?

Its to easy for him. We have a load of tools and a nice porter Cable router that we can cut some grooves in MDF and put some pieces of wood in there to hold the fins straight. We will work something out.

I cut mine out of foam core due to lack of good tools atm .

Howard, if you are a member of the composites rocketry group, you could view some pics of the method I use for surface-mounting fins. These were for a 3" MD rocket. It's relatively easy, and my rockets fly straight. The pics start here.

BSD's website has a fin template that you can print out to mark tubes. I print out the template then spray glue it to a scrap of plywood, cut out for the fin pattern I am using and there it is.

Oh! Oh! Oh! Here's what I'm going to do with the 4" scratchy I'm working on:

Print out the template from BSD.
Glue the template onto some foam board.
Cut a hole in some plywood with my jigsaw. (I don't have or can't find my hole saws or spade bits.)
Glue the foam board onto the plywood.

BRILLIANT!

So if you can wait till NARCON, my company is releasing the standard rocket assembly tool at the show. It acts not only as the most flexible jig for fins, it also acts as a cradle for when you apply fillets. I still don't have pricing narrowed down but it will be less that $100 and handle tubes up to 4 inches. No more details until just over a month from now.

I can't wait to see it! A fin jig usable from everything Estes/low power to 4" high power and everything in between would be VERY useful. Under $100 sounds great.

Perhaps a bit less RIO might've helped slow him down some...


ObOnTopic: I'll second the BSD printout along with a simple
cardboard cutout to align the fins. Unless you intend to
approach mach or something silly like that.

Not vaporware... Just regular job getting in the way ware.

I'm tweaking the bracket design to take care of a slight bend (1-2 degrees) that appears when the brackets are cut from the raw sheet metal. Don't know if it was heat from the laser or just stress within the stock.

Putting together a small run is just as expensive as a large run so I'm trying to get all of my homework done beforehand.

I have the week of the April 11th on vacation to see the shuttle launch so if it goes up on time I'll get the website finished later in the week along with some instructional videos done.

I have seen the prototype at our club meeting. Nice concept and the magnets are very powerful. Maybe you'll have some at NSL in WI, Lyle??:D
