2 Stages

I was just wondering...I want to make a 2 stage rocket from scratch, but I'm not quite sure if there's anything special I have to do between the stages. Is there a certain amount of spacing needed between the engines, so they can ignite? How tightly coupled should the first stage section be to the rest of the rocket?

That would depend on the type of motors you are planning to fly the rocket on.
If its a low powered rocket, you might want to check out the designs of comercially produced kits that are available from manufacturers like Apogee or Estes.
