It's been reported that the US deficit has reached 1 trillion dollars. that's a lot of moola! But how much exactly?

I'm trying to figure out how big a pile it would be..
one trillion: a '1' and 12 'zeros'

A stack of $1 dollar bills, would be a pile 0.003” x 1 trillion

3,000,000,000 inches
250,000,000 feet
47,348.48 miles! Almost twice around the planet!

if laid end to end:
6,000,000,000,000 inches
50,000,000,000 feet
94,696,969.7 miles
Or 3802 times around the globe
Or a 'one way' trip to the sun! (with change for soda once there!)

Does that sound right?

($1 dollar bill is 0.003” thick, and 6” long)
(5,280 feet in a mile)
(earth’s circumference = 24,902 miles)
(about 93 million miles between the sun & earth)

how many moon bases & manned Mars missions could we get for that?

I was also about to use a 'loonie' as the unit measure, but only us Canadiuns, and a few 'Northeners' (US northern states) would know what that is!

Board? Yes.
Entertained? soemtimes.
Thinking? this is how we get into trouble!! :D:D

what about pennies. if we stacked pennies one on top of the other(flat) with 1 trillion dollars, we'd have 100 trillion pennies. a penny is 1.43mm thick, so 1.43x100,000,000,000,000. thats 14.3 (whats after trillion? quadrillion? lol) thats 14.3 quadrillion mm's, there are 1,609,344mm's in a mile, therefore, there are 14.3 trillion miles in 1 trillion dollars worth of pennies stacked on top of each other. of course, if everyone in here saw what i see now, then i just wasted about 20 minuted conjuring this solution up, when i could've simply put 100,000,000,000,000 over 1.43. however, i was way to ambitious from the get go and i just wasted a ton of time doing a math problem that looks overwhelming, however, most 5th graders could solve for as long as they've got good teachers. thank you for reading this useless information.

I thought it was more like 4 to 8 Trillion dollars or 280 million Euros...

Lets' simply collect our protection money from the oil fields of Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq and then zero the books...

... huh?.....huh?

Works for me ;)

If you flame proofed the one dollar bills they would make great recovery wadding.

I was under the impression that was our Trade Deficit, or similar. 1 Trillion sounds awfully small for something managed by the US Treasury, isn't it somewhere around 4 Trillion? * pops open another browser window to abuse Google * Hrm. 7.5 Trillion.

Hmmm... 1 trillion dollars would buy a LOT of sharks with laser beams on their heads.

Add to that the countries we helped rebuilt from previous wars. If we collected "borrowed" monies, we'd have a surplus!

You're going the wrong way. Deficit means negative numbers. The distances are right, but headed in the other direction. Almost two times around the planet backwards, that you'd have to cover just to get to the starting place. If you think that's a silly distinction, try it with your checking account.

Let's see. 7 Trillion Dollars.

I have estimated that there are ~10,000 serious rocketeers in the US (more than a year or two in the hobby). If evenly split, that's 700 million apiece!

Think of the projects!

Bob Krech

Well, with 700 Million dollars, and Deuces costing $15.95 apiece, that would mean 43,887,147 Deuces. Jim, ya better get busy!

WW;)
