Well from time to time I build rockets. Recently, SSS (sssrocketry.org) just finished our 4th and final regional for the year.

One of our events was Sci-Fi (Concept Scale). For this event, I decided to build and fly something close to my heart; Battlestar Galactica Viper.

Our cable provider has a channel named, Retro TV (RTV). On Saturday night, after Airwolf and Buck Rogers, Battlestar Galactica comes on at 9pm Ariona time. This has to be one of the greatest Sci-Fi TV shows ever created; third only to the Outer Limits and the original Star Trek.

When Patrick McKnee of Avengers fame, and the BG chartacter, Count Iblis the Cylon Imperious Leader!!!, starts into his dialogue...

"There are those who believe that life here began out there, far across the universe, with tribes of humans who may have been the forefathers of the Egyptians, or the Toltecs, or the Mayans. That they may have been the architects of the great pyramids, or the lost civilizations of Lemuria or Atlantis. Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man who even now fight to survive somewhere beyond the heavens... (the theatrical version of the pilot ends with this phrase: "...far far away amongst the stars...")"

I get all warm and fuzy and wish to join the 13th lost tribe of man in his quest to survive. This show had it ALL until some IDIOT decided it would be a good idea to find Earth ... the show went into the toilet after that.

The Viper is lets just all agree, short of super-awesome. It is fast, manuverable, and packs a punch. It is the PERFECT craft to model for Concept Scale.

I decided to scale it up from the Estes kit, to use BT-60 tubes. My next build will be from balsa and light ply and give it a TRUE scale contour. Using cylinders just doesn't do the craft the justice as it deserves.

I used Verna's Rockets page for inspiration and ideas: http://www.vernarockets.com/id26.html

It flew for a first place at last Saturday's regional. I built it with 24mm main mount and 3 13mm mounts that air-start to simulate 'TURBO!'; a F32 for main with 3 A10 for TURBO.

Enjoy the pictures and during the year (after NARAM) I will start in on a refined larger version.

Here I have just finished clear coating of the Viper.

Next here I am with my Viper on the Raindbow Valley 'Launch Bay Alpha' range:

Next photo is of Boomer streaking skyward after we received an alert that Luke AFB was coming under attack by Cylon forces. Boomer was able to down a Cylon and took damage (laser cannon was lost) in the lauch. Boomer was able to eject and float down with no further damage under a 45" inch nylon chute. I will get his cannon replaced and ready him for future combat sorties!

Hope you enjoyed my Battlestar Galactica fantasy as mush as I did!

    Jonathan

Fleeing from the Cylon tyranny, the last Battlestar, Galactica, leads a rag-tag fugitive fleet on a lonely quest -- a shining planet, known as Earth.

Congrats on winning and and it looks like you did a tremendous job.

You might consider posting your next build on TRF. It looks interesting as well as challenging.

VERY cool!!! Love the Viper and your write-up! Very creative!!!

MAN how I wish that cable channel you mentioned would be mirrored in some way on DirectTV... that would be SO cool! Sorta like a mind-meld between Sci-Fi (before it became SyFy, whatever that's supposed to be) and TVLand... more like what Sci-Fi used to be back when it started... before all this new 'crapola' that passes for modern sci-fi... Sorry it just doesn't hold a candle to the old BSG, Buck Rogers, classic Trek, etc...

I'd love to see a Cylon Raider model capable of giving chase to your Viper... been thinking about that for awhile. I'd imagine it'd have to be modified with an "atmospheric probe" much like the Estes TIE fighter to make it stable in flight... ugly but necessary because of physics... At any rate, it would be a cool thing to fly... :)

Keep up the good work! OL JR :)

    JR,

Thank you for your kind words.

IMHO, the only show that I can respect and enjoy over the last 10 years well make it 15 or so, would have been Babylon 5. I found it refreshing and not the same 'cookie-cutter' sci-fi. The X Files ranks up there; although chasing ET and UFOs got a bit boring, but their look into the paranormal was great! I personally have seen something that would classify as a ghost, but that is for another posting. :y:

What ever happened to great shows like: The Invaders, Time Tunnel, Land of the Giants, Lost in Space, Quark (the intersellar garbage man), Sliders, Quantum Leap, Space 1999 (Year one, year two with Maya the shape shifter SUCKED!!!), UFO, Capt. Jonathan Powers and the Soldiers of the Future (THE GREATEST SAT. Morning KID's PROGRAM EVER PRODUCED!!!).

If you are Gen X and you DON'T know who Capt. Power and the Soldiers of the Future were ... I feel sorry for you ... no I REALLY feel sorry for you :(

TV today sucks big time. I only watch the following when there isn't a sporting event or special on:

    The Military Channel
    National Geographic Channel
    Discovery Science Channel
HNL for Nancy Gracy, once Joy Behar comes on, the channel changes faster than the speed of light! Too bad, sexy lady Joy, just dumb as gum between the ears.
Lifetime Movie Network - Have to spend time watching what the wife likes
    History Channel
Retro TV - Here is their link, get your cable provider to suscribe:

    http://www.myretrotv.com/

That is IT, out of 120+ channels, I feel only confortable with 8, then the ESPN channels when I watch sports.

I don't know, nor do I give a you-know-what about ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX O'Reily has become a predictable bore and I can sometimes tolerate Glenn Beck, UPN, MTV, I don't watch programming on those channels. And I am proud of it!

Copy that! More channels now than you can shake a stick at and NOTHING hardly on TV worth watching...

I like Axe Men, American Loggers, Deadliest Catch, Pawn Stars, and most of the offerings on History, History International, The Military Channel, Discovery, Science Channel, and a few others... but that's about it.

I haven't watched broadcast network TV in probably 5 years-- ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, UPN or anything like that I'm REMOTELY interested in... 99% of it looks like pure drivel. I used to watch COPS pretty regularly, and I got into Star Trek Enterprise after it was cancelled (got burned out on "too much Trek" about the time DS9 got all weird with Worf coming in and marrying Dax, and Voyager going from weird to weirder... Shame about Enterprise because it was REALLY becoming a good show when it was canned.

Still, they just don't make them like Buck Rogers, classic BSG, and Trek and TNG anymore... and that's sad. The new BSG just never really interested me; I watched part of a few shows and it just seemed too weird... too much the demon spawn you'd get from crossing BSG with Melrose Place or something... Even the new "V" just doesn't really interest me. The OLD "V" is absolutely classic... the new one reminds me of the few episodes of "LOST" I saw visiting my sister (who ALWAYS had that junk running on the TV).

Oh well... glad I have DVD and the shows on disks... so I don't have to watch the modern 'drivel' revisions of the classics... :)

    Later! OL JR :)

PS... what did you use for cannons on your Viper?? :D

    JD,

I love the Viper and your Viper too!
When you do your 'scale' Viper, take lots of pic's and notes!
    Great job.

    Jonathan,

EXCELLENT Viper! We enjoyed the monologue too.

I'm glad you found the website helpful. I was going to post a link to "Starbuck DeBerg's" website but she beat me to it. ;)

When you have a minute be sure to go see Sue's Vipers and all of her special creations. She has many, really nice ships there.

And as Sue said, welcome to Red Squadron! The more members we have the better. I'll have Randy post some photos to the permanent page asap.

So instead of the Force, Luke (AFB) used the Viper? :)

Very nice! Two kits I always wanted when I was a kid: The BSG Viper and the Space:1999 Eagle.
