I used to play a WWII flight sim called IL-2. Four of us started an online squadron called the Hell Hounds. As part of the game you could create missions for people to play. If you connected a series of missions you could create campaigns. A lot of people made campaigns for the P-51, the Spitfire or the FW-190.

I went the other route and made campaigns for the “crap” planes as they were often called. I made fictitious campaigns for the Japanese seaplane named the Rufe, the Russian IL-2 torpedo bomber and the U.S. Navy SBD-3. In one of the SBD campaigns you are assigned to an escort carrier that was sent to the Aleutians to fight the Japanese that have set up a base on a small island. The escort carrier Casablanca (CVE-55) was modified to withstand the frigid environment and renamed The Polar Viper.

As a tribute to my friends in the Hell Hounds I painted this rocket using (more or less) a WWII U.S. Navy color scheme. I added the call signs we used on one tail; Beebop, Dubbo, Quazi, and Zeus-cat. I put The Polar Viper’s mascot on another tail. And I put the 55 on the final tail as I used CVE-55 in the campaign.

The decal of the mascot didn’t turn out that well and I will replace it. I will also add a larger version of the mascot between Zeus-cat and The Polar Viper lettering. And just in case anyone feels the need to ask, the snake is wearing a scarf because it’s a polar viper and its cold up there. :D

And here she is lifting off on her maiden voyage this afternoon on an AT H73 Black Jack. She went about 1,200 feet before coming back down safely.

I had new decals made. I scraped off the snake decal on the rear fin and added a new decal on the av bay. I think they turned out quite well and finish off the rocket.
