Max Thrust Advice for a Large BT-80 Rocket

Check out the Fliss kits Richter Recker if you haven’t. It’s a BT 80 based rocket with a 3X 24 mm cluster. It’s 92 inches long. I Chad staged mine with 3xE12-0 to 3 E12-8. It flew beautifully.

    LOC Onyx to ToobOnyx

The ugly bird flew nicely today on a F67. Looks like it's earned a new coat of paint! Fun times at the sod farm!

    LOC Onyx to ToobOnyx

Tube fins are attached. Still to cold to paint so the Ugly ToobOnyx will fly tomorrow so it can earn matching colors. :) A few more modifications to the nose cone are planned so that it can hold a 29mm CTI 6 grain case. Let's see what happens tomorrow.

    LOC Onyx to ToobOnyx

Time to attach the fins: I love how body diameter tube fins jig themselves. I hope to have a flyable rocket for Saturday's TriCities Rocketeers launch. It's a bit to cold to paint in the garage so it will be one ugly rocket!

    LOC Onyx to ToobOnyx

Six beveled tube fins ready for attachment. Once glued to the rocket I'll reinforce the leading and trailing edges with watercolor paper tape.

    LOC Onyx to ToobOnyx

One of the changes is to add positive motor retention. The original was friction fit and there isn'e enough exposed motor tube to use a retainer. After input on this site and FB I decided to add retention clips.

    LOC Onyx to ToobOnyx

One of the first mid power kits I built was the LOC Onyx sometime around 2005-6? I had many fun flights with it until one of the fins broke off on landing. I repaired it but the fins kept cracking. The rocket ended up in the box of 'someday'. After a move last year I ran into it again as I was...

What did you do rocket wise today?

The conversion of my old Onyx to the ToobOnyx has begun! I'll modify the tube fins in the morning and lay them up. They will look like these tube fins. It should scoot on a CTI G145 Pink!

Total eclipse coming, 8 April 2024!

It would be cool, but honestly I'd rather be on the ground. The transformation of the natural world as the eclipse happens is STUNNING! You would miss all of that on a plane. Granted the ground location is all up to the weather.

Let's Talk About Painting the LOC 4' Goblin

Your right, on some rockets I can't be bothered, and I've even flown them naked! It's cool that there are lots of ways to have fun in rocketry!

    Old LOC Onyx Rebuild

Thanks for the suggestions. I decided to go with brass threaded inserts. The plan is to use two on opposite sides with a version of kaplow clips. I'll probably add enough ply so that the brass insert is fully engaged. The screws are 6-32's.

    Old LOC Onyx Rebuild

Those work great when you have access to the interior to install the T-nuts. I don't in this case unless I'm missing something? Thanks!

    Old LOC Onyx Rebuild

I found the first midpower rocket I ever built- a LOC Onyz. It hasn't flown in many years because of cracked fins. My plan is to cut off the fins and rebuild it as a 7 tube fin rocket. While I'm at it I would like to add positive motor retention. The original design is for friction fit. Any...
