Yet another "ESTES sent me a smashed package" thread.

I just got two in the last two weeks. Not the carrier's fault though. Apparently if a body tube will not fit into the company's plastic sleeve, the acceptable course of action is to force it in. I got a Mercury Redstone with a deformed tube from a LHS and an STM-012 off od eBay, both with...

    Several Plastic Cements

Any of the three will work, they are all designed for styrene, which is what that capsule is made of. The Testors is the slowest setting of the three, and the Tamiya is probably the most popular in the plastic modeling world. Also, MEK is a good suitable plastic welder if you have any in the...

What's wrong with America's high schools?

What Al said. No accountability either academically or socially, no parental involvement, a sense of entitlement, and a system that does not engender any amount of a appreciation for achievement. Not to mention it being a test tube for all kinds of social experimentation and curriculum. JR

    How can I slow deployment?

Sliders have been in use on full size 'chutes for years. They are one of the things that made the square chute practical for skydiving. Prior to the sliders, the opening shock of a square chute was brutal, to say the least. A nylon ring even loosely fitted to the suspension lines should make...

How do you strengthen balsa wood fins?

Loctite makes a thin CA that works pretty well, but if you get super thin CA from a hobby shop, that is the best. JR

How do you strengthen balsa wood fins?

Coat the fins with thin CA. Hit with accelerator and sand immediately. Hard and strong. It also keeps edges from getting dinged.

    Magneto launch controller

Try something like this. Telephone magnetos produce some serious juice. Don't accidently touch the terminals when you are cranking. It's an experience you'll likely not forget for quite some time...

    Self Defense

At least they will know where to look for your body. Contrary to Hollywood, dumpsters, mailboxes and overturned desks make really lousy bullet stops.

Queston on staging - gap between motors

The gap would be within a tube the same size as the motor (BT-50), between the top of the booster and the nozzle of the sustainer. JR

Queston on staging - gap between motors

What would be considered the largest acceptable gap between the top end of a “D” booster motor and the nozzle of a “D” sustainer nozzle to ensure ignition. I am looking at a scale/semi-scale two stager that, if built to specs, would leave a 3 inch gap between the two motors. Is this wishful...

How do you guys use Aerogloss sanding sealer?

I don't use the hobby based stuff anymore. This is much more economical, and with the can size, I can dip nose cones. Put down two of three coats before you sand, then sand between each coat. You will end up with fins and cones that look like they are made of plastic when you paint them...

ASP WAC Corporal w/Tiny Tim Booster 18mm to 18mm build

Hit the leading and trailing edges with thin CA, it will toughen them up significantly. Used this trick on VERY thin trailing edges on an RC sailplane. It works great, JR

    Vostok-1 144th AirFix 13mm motor PMC.

I have been following your thread with a great deal of interest. I have been also been doing a PMC on a Vostok. I am using the 1/72 Mach 2 R7 rocket, converting it to the Vostok version. It has involved scratchbuilding everything from the top of the main core up. The walls on the main core...

    Plastic Model Conversion (PMC) Gallery

John, Thanks for the input. Your picture looks suspiciously like the 1/100 MPC kit. I will be using the Mach 2 kit from France in 1/72 scale. It is actually an R7 prototype rocket, so to get a Vostok, I will be scratchbuilding everything from the taper above the boosters upwards from...
