A tale of three Big Daddies...

A few moons back, a friend built a 54mm Big Daddy clone out of fiberglass. He did use a set of the original Estes decals, tho. ;) Kevlar cord, chute inside the n/c, used to fly it on the AT J800. 3, 2, 1... pull the trigger. He also paid my daughter $50 to find it for him. Twice. :D

ISO a 75mm hardpoint like Giant Leap sells for 38 and 54.

Someone posted looking for a 75mm hard point. That motor retainer is machined aluminum. Drill a symmetrical pattern of half inch holes around the top for your venting, jam-nut the eyebolt in place, and install it. If you can break that aluminum, or pull out the eyebolt, something was VERY...

ISO a 75mm hardpoint like Giant Leap sells for 38 and 54.

Apogee markets a 75mm internal motor retainer for MD birds that is very similar in design to the hard point you seek. It could be used as-is or modified to meet your particular needs. You can drill it and epoxy tee-nuts inside the unit for screw installation.

    Not complaining but...

Once had a 54MD that I put ~$100 and 40 hours into the paint job. Plenty of high-build primer, hours and hours of sanding down to 1600 grit, then some of that color-changing paint. Man, that thing was pretty. It got half thrashed in the back of the van on the way to Black Rock, then got a...

    favorite motors?

Favorites in commercial motors? Gotta be the sparkies. Throaty as hell. Loud, rippin', poppin'... Oh yeah! Other than those, I prefer Rx.

    Any Astronomers here?

Ran around with the Stockton Astronomical Society for several years. Still have several very nice scopes, but don't get to use them any more. Can't lift 'em. Wasted lumbar. I can no longer lift the carbon Mongoose in my avatar, let alone a large EQ mount, or my Dob OTA. It sux. :( But I...

    GUNS & ROCKETS

Did someone say 22-250? Browning B78 falling block, topped with a Weaver V36. Carefully assembled hand loads will take a flea off a dog's butt at 100 yards without waking up the dog. That rifle is a ground grizzly's worst nightmare.

    Chevy brakes help.

Right now, you probably have a brake system warning light on. That's because your proportioning valve is off-set, and you will find that you have NO rear brakes. For vehicles with a proportioning valve, they make a tool to use for bleeding. You remove the switch from the center port on the...

Parachute in Big Daddy nose cone

If you're going to do this, be sure to use a nylon or Kevlar cord, and plenty of ejection charge, and you might consider installing some mass in the very tip of the n/c. Initially, the ejection pressure will push the chute farther up into the n/c, then you will be relying on the momentum of the...

    Imperial vs. Metric

Those Metrinch wrenches are cute, and might be something to check out. But right or wrong, they would need to be demonstrated over a period of time before a shop full of professionals will embrace them. Just one rounded off bolt or nut... The guys in the shop where I worked were absolutely...

    Imperial vs. Metric

Decades ago, spent 6 months driving a mobile service truck for the employer, doing road calls. It's a big ol' mid-80's GMC, with a service bed, a liftgate, and a big compressor. Finish a road call, hop in the truck, and head down the road. I notice the voltage in the truck is down, must be a...

    Another Lathe ? Thread

Has anyone mentioned how many cases and nozzles one can buy with the money spent on a lathe and tooling? (Buying a lathe is a little like buying a telescope. You thought the scope was expensive until you started buying eyepieces and filters for it. And that lathe is an expensive piece of...

    Storm Area 51

I'll toss out 2 cents here... I recall reading that so far, in 5% of the digital sky survey, they've cataloged over 33 million galaxies, each containing billions to hundreds of billions of stars. That's 5% of the sky, and to borrow from Billy-Bob Thornton, it's a big-ass sky. Do the math. Your...

    The Future of Pickup Trucks?

SCVTA had a small experimental fleet (3) of hydrogen fuel cell coaches they ran for a few years in the early 2K's. While the coach itself put only H2O out its tailpipe, it turns out that at the time, hydrogen production was so filthy, that passenger mile per passenger mile, the environment was...
