    Sts-121

A friend and I are backpacking America for July and I couldn't help but notice (!!) that the STS-121 launch window runs for the first half of July. I'd love to see it launch but planning around what obviously a very changeable event is pretty hard. Can we expect NASA to set an actual launch...

Estes motor problem that I've never heard of

OK, I've not known anything like this, hopefully someone has had similar things happen and can enlighten me. Imagine the scene....half an hour ago I was sat in my room, imagine the shock when I saw an opened pack of D12-7s....with green nozzles!! I bought these just a month ago and there was...

    Stability with outboards

Quick question - I have a model with a BT-50 centre tube and another 4 BT-50 tubes around the outside. When I determining stability what do I use as a "body tube diameter", is it the 24mm for the BT-50, maybe the length of the three tubes next to eachother, or the equivalent diameter that would...

    OT: Aerospace Engineering

I'm looking at courses to do at University and I'm pretty sure I want to do engineering, either electronic or aerospace. I know a few people here have Aerospace degrees, what sort of stuff did you end doing? I hear a lot of how the job market is pretty flat in aerospace...is it? Thanks

    SpaceCAD problem

Whilst talking in the chat room I started messing about with SpaceCAD - I noticed when I added a weight to one model the altitude didn't even change! This model was multi-stage using Estes D12s but it was apparently going to lift 72kg! Something was obviously wrong so I kept experimenting...

    OT: Redecorating the Rocket Room

Its half-term so I have a week of college/school and I'm going to spend it redecorating my bedroom. My mum has agreed to pay for some stuff (thank you!) provided I do all the work myself. Some would say my room at the moment is cluttered to say the least. Hopefully by this time next week...

    VMX-treme

Just for who havn't stumbled across the VMX gliders yet, this is based on the VMX-2 from Orbital Engineering www.orbitalengineering.net My modified VMX (dubbed VMX-treme) is a two-stage cluster version, the lower stage recovering by streamer or chute and the upper stage gliding down. The...

Any X-Prize teams going for launch?

Subject says it all...anybody know if any of the other teams are going to attempt a launch anytime soon? Would be great to see and give SS1 a bit of competition!

    OT: Gap Years

Did anyone here take a gap year before going into higher education? If so I'd be interested to hear what you did, what you got out of it etc. etc. Thanks

    Earthquake Tragedy

I thought I'd start a thread on the tragic loss of almost 80,000 lives. Its the holiday season so many of you may push world events to the back of your mind, this time last year 30,000+ people were killed in an earthquake in Bam. Please consider making a donation to one of the many...

    Glider Question

Very quick question - with rocket gliders is there a simple rule of thumb about CG/CP to determine whether something will glide? Something like the CG should be on top of the CP or something?

OT: Places to vist in the US

Some friends and I are planning to go away next summer. At the moment we're looking at places to go (Paris, Barcelona etc.) Anyway one possibility would be a trip to the States, the flights are more expensive so we'd have to make it worth it. So what would you guys say are the best things...

    New Brit Members

About a month ago Wik (with backing of other Brit members) placed an ad for TRF in the UKRA newsletter and over the last few weeks there's been quite a few Brit members sign up. Just wondering how successfull the ad was, anyone hear about the forum from it? Oh, welcome to TRF too!

    Larger clusters

I know there's many techniques for lighting large numbers of motors (flashpan etc.) but with kits such as the Hydra 7 how easy is it to light 7 motors each with a standard Estes ignitor? I know the launch system needs to be one beefy piece of equipment that can put a lot of power into the...

    Parasite Glider Question

Looking at Parasite gliders where the glider "hangs on" to the side of the airframe such as the Orbital Transport. This obviously creates a high drag on one side, does the drag need to be balanced out on the other side? If not, can this assymetrical (!) drag cause a model to go unstable?

    Nice MPR+ Pad

The things I fly seem to be getting larger and larger and I'm sure it won't be long untill I jump head first into M/HPR. This season I've been using a converted camera tripod that I staked into the ground. It's been great for LPR but I'm pretty skeptical about launching larger stuff from it...
