The 81mm (Hammerhead) has not been common for a while. The 54mm is a lot longer but easier to manage for most airframes.

Was the less than 9v measured with load or without? A 9v should measure higher than 9v when unloaded - anything measuring below 9v without load might be pretty spent. Had this combination of low voltage and ejection canisters been tested with the Adept before? I had a problem with a Giant...

Another option for future builds is to look in the wire section for the clamping u-bolt shaped things they use on stranded wire. If you remove the U shaped clamp and just use a couple of flat washers and the nuts that come with it you have a tiny u-bolt.
