    My 1st Q-Jet experience

Actually it is NOT there to close off the nozzle and build up pressure. It is there to provide a vent to allow gas to escape while the igniter is burning. Otherwise the pressure will spit out the igniter before the composite propellant ignites. Once the propellant ignites, it will spit out the...

    Nicrome wire gauge?

The original Estes Igniters with the blue pyrogen and the center of the wire under each area of pyrogen smashed flat (to increase resistance) were 30 ga. When they stopped smashing them flat and switched to the brown or grey pyrogen, they changed to 31 ga.

    Nicrome wire gauge?

I have several miles of 30, 31 and 32 ga. Nichrome wire. I bought the iron-free variety. Someone was selling it out of their garage and had a MASSIVE amount from a wire distributor. I bought all the spools of 30, 31 and 32 ga. For something like a 6 volt alkaline battery (like the old fashioned...

Estes Loadstar: near miss and a redesign

It is not overstability that is the problem. It is too low a thrust for the booster motor. They need a C11-0 or D12-0 in that booster to make that absurdly heavy two-stage payload rocket fly straight.

    "lift off" definition

“lift off” is different than “free flight”. starting to move upward is liftoff. leaving a launch rod or rail is free flight. And that does not address if the Rocket is fin stabilized or uses a guidance system.

    "lift off" definition

First movement. When thrust exceeds weight and it starts to move. For NASA , it is when the hold-downs release and it starts to move upwards. it “lifts off”. Pretty simple term.

Sustained Cold Exposed Estes A/B Motors

Fine. Issue is with firing motor at 75F lower than the max temp that the motor experienced.

Update 2/24 received HobbyLinc has F15-0 with cheaper HazMat charge

Hobbylinc has been illegally shipping motors with over 30 grams of propellant via parcel post for many years. I do not think it is intentional. I think they just do not understand and they mis-classified many products. You can call them and try to educate them if you feel like it. Or maybe...

Anyone still having E engines explode

Estes’ new motor making machine must be working. All the D12 and E12 motors at my local Hobby Lobby all have date codes from late 2020. And the D12 date code is printed in a way different font. I did not buy any because we are in lockdown and there are no legal launch sites.

    Estes's Ignitors and the Plug

See attached. I have several miles of the good (rust free no-iron) NiChrome wire in 30, 31 and 32 ga. Club uses a car battery which makes the NiChrome turn into molten metal - starting at the tiny loop/coil. VERY reliable.

    Estes's Ignitors and the Plug

Just in case someone is doing this: DO NOT insert the plug between the two wires of the Estes Starter or Igniter. It is designed to be inserted NEXT TO the two thick wires. Modern B6 motors have almost no "centerbore" and therefore the fragile tip of the Starter is much more prone to being...

Yes, but the flight crew has Ipeco seats. I'm the Service Engineer who answers questions related to them and works with Ipeco as needed. I also deal with all the other seats on all the Boeing/Douglas models (except 787), such as passenger seats, attendant seats, observer seats, supernumerary...
