    Javelin

Excellent! I've been wanting to make a Javelin myself.

    Beginner ‘Chute sewing/resources

I have an Autistic son, 5. He loves rockets, and he’s really liked doing sewing with his mom. I’m all about learning to make stuff, so I support it fully. I had the thought that maybe he would enjoy sewing his own ‘chute, to fly in a rocket he built. Does anybody have an suggestions about what...

LOC Precision 4 inch AIM-54C Phoenix

It’s worth noting that I built mine “heavy” to survive my 5-year old son — as well as survive potential L1 Cert failures. (And I didn’t expect that failure to come from the Aerotech delay drill, of all things). I ‘glassed the tube and fins with S-Glass, and filled all of the fin can voids with...

LOC Precision 4 inch AIM-54C Phoenix

I’m very late to the party, but… I certed 1&2 with my 4” LOC Phoenix. I’ll gladly tell you everything I think I know, provide my OpenRocket files, etc. I have one suggestion from my own experience: use an “I” motor. The “H” I did my first attempt on had one major problem: there wasn’t enough...

Help Me Fix My L1 Disaster

I also bought a tube of green Acryl from Amazon. My only advice for it I’ve already said: unless you’re filling pinholes, give it at least 12 hours to dry. I tried some fillet work with it (instead of using 2-part Evercoat Optex). Even at 38°C (100°F) in dry desert, a thin coat (about 1mm), was...

Help Me Fix My L1 Disaster

There are two kinds of body filler: one-part, and two-part. The two-part is typically catalyzed polyester filler. Smells like hell’s dumpster, cures pretty fast. I’ve had good results with Evercoat Rage Optex - it changes color from pink to green as it cures. Easy to sand. Some fillers can...

    Short fat rockets

I wanna be cool, so I’m building a 54mm Big Daddy.

Help Me Fix My L1 Disaster

I’ll second the ‘body filler & sand’ method. Pics are after and before primer.

    BAMA Chutes...

I’m VERY happy to hear he’s OK:D. And hopefully doing some stuff he enjoys. As I said I’m not really worried about the chute I ordered; it’s just a thing and I have no doubt he’ll deliver. People matter more.

    BAMA Chutes...

I’ve got a custom chute ordered with Ben @ BAMAchutes... I’ve noticed that the BAMAchutes Facebook page is down, and I’ve been unable to contact him at all (Phone, Email, his store page, and Facebook messenger) since the beginning of July. Since I ran out of time, I had to buy a different...

    Upset off Newbie....(mostly frustrated)

OP: for what it’s worth, I was chastised that propellant discussions belong in the EX forum a few months ago when I idly wondered about “snot” powered rockets. If you’re into history, I really suggest reading Mark Canepa’s book Large and Dangerous Rocket Ships, as it covers the many struggles —...

Is “freebag” deployment allowed for L1/2 cert flights?

The slo-mo audio is a pretty good stand in for the tortured screams of the damned. I don’t think I’ll be able to *not* think of it while I try to go to sleep. Bravo, sir. You win one internet.

Is “freebag” deployment allowed for L1/2 cert flights?

I honestly haven’t decided yet, but I’m exploring options. I think the Weather Gods may heavily influence my decision. I’ll (hopefully) be making attempts at Black Rock (BALLS launch site), so there’s not really anywhere for the pieces to hide. At the end of the day, I’m most interested in...

Is “freebag” deployment allowed for L1/2 cert flights?

Tripoli’s guide says: So am I understanding it correctly that I can use a deployment bag in a “freebag” setup on an L1/L2 certification flight — where the nose cone and rocket come down separately with their own ‘chutes?

Center of pressure in sim vs the kit's manual

So if I'm doing the right graph... It appears that the Cp really is about 27 +/- 0.5" at launch, and then it rapidly moves rearward to 29". If my understanding is right, then I've been informed quite a bit, and I thank you!.

Center of pressure in sim vs the kit's manual

I'm building a LOC Phoenix 4" to certify L1 (and maybe L2) with. Pretty much the only step left is to add nose weight and place the CG, and making sure it's in a "good enough" place versus the CP. And here I run into a bit of a problem, and I'd like to know what's going on... the kit's...

Parachute: how tight is too tight?

So do you take the chalk for the tip of the cue stick and “draw” on the chute protector? Or do you mean chalk used to keep your hands dry — like weightlifters or climbers use? What makes it better than cornstarch-free talc?(Honest questions...)

Parachute: how tight is too tight?

4” tube, 60” parabolic chute (I have 8” of length I can use. I also have a 60” Sky Angle Classic II (which is bigger when packed, as it has heavier fabric. I doubt I’ll use that one just yet. A big factor is the landing surface: nearly as hard as concrete. Longer is a no-go. No room. I can...

Parachute: how tight is too tight?

I have no problem with electronic deployment (I’m a computer engineer, and can design everything from the circuit board to the firmware), but for now... No. My reasons: I’m worried about the parachute being too tight with the available room as-is. I’m not sure there is space for an altimeter...

Parachute: how tight is too tight?

I’m using motor ejection until I feel more confident that I’ll recover successfully, so that sounds like really good advice. The only assumption I feel safe making at this point is that high power isn’t like low power rockets. Well, that and I’m gravity’s plaything.
