    Rieces Pieces anyone?

Finished up a Big Bertha with the nose cone mod. Not the cover art paint a 'custom' job :D But it sure gives me a hankering for some Rieces Pieces! 20200504_180557 by Tom Whit, on Flickr

    Estes-Shuttle: Build

Thanks Andrew. A little more progress on the shuttle part anyhow. 20200410_201635 by Tom Whit, on Flickr The card stock had a few convex areas so I decided on more for show than go and started adding putty. Wont really be that much added weight. 20200412_153305 by Tom Whit, on Flickr A shot...

What was the deal with Estes Big Daddy nose cones?

I have another theory, although not founded in evidence. Possibly since the nose cone has that angled tilted section when the pressure wave hits the nosecone it might kind of tilt it to one side. More pressure on one side than the other causing it to 'wedge' at an angle and not come out. Just...

What was the deal with Estes Big Daddy nose cones?

Darn, I dong have any lite ply left around here. Guess I will have to order a sheet. What thickness would you suggest?

What was the deal with Estes Big Daddy nose cones?

I will be receiving a new Big Daddy kit to work on soon to help fight off boredom :D But I remembered there was some sort of issue with the nose cone of this model. I did a brief search and found lots of 'yes I modded my nose cone' but no real examples of what was actually done. Thanks in...

    Estes-Shuttle: Build

Last bit for tonight... Got the aft half of the bottom card stock in place after trimming and sanding the fore card stock. This part did not take much tape, in fact I dident use any tape at all :D As you can see the card stock is slightly oversized which is a good thing. A little trimming and...

    Estes-Shuttle: Build

Hrm not sure why those images don't show. Maybe need smaller... Anyhow after gluing up the framework and sanding proceeded to apply the cardstock. The cardstock is quite thick. 20200407_193224 by Tom Whit, on Flickr I decided to pre 'curl' the cardstock. Curled it a bit by hand and then...

    Estes-Shuttle: Build

Sure why not! Wont be any where near as nice as yours but I noticed you omitted some of the steps for the glider part. Since I am just getting started on it... Glider framed out. Top and bottom stringers glued in place waiting for the glue to cure. I used wood glue so I had time to make sure...

    Estes-Shuttle: Build

Thanks for your build thread. I just started one of these yesterday. One thing I found right away, while building the glider part, is the first and smallest formers is extremely fragile. I strongly suggest make sure the center hole is cut out and sanded for a good fit to the body tube BEFORE...

    An intricate masking job!

Been working on an Estes LEO Space train. got it all put together and realized the bottom of the model was supposed to be painted black. I had already painted all the white, and masked and did the 'trim' with flat black. Then realized I forgot the bottom of the wing. So I did this 'intricate'...

    Bonding painted surfaces?

I am working on an Estes Space Train. Some of the parts are better / easier painted before assembly. Its a minor piece the 'booster' section so I not worried with structural. Other than wind ripping it off. Its a body tube that would be painted with enamel. The body tube fits into some...

Leo Space Train available from Estes

Did he ever get a start on this kit? I just got one and wow it is an involved build! I was wondering one thing. Some of the balsa parts have panel lines burned into them. I usually paper my fins. Will you still see the panel lines through the paper? If you sand it too much will the lines sand...

    Olympus

I am just finishing up one of these now. Did you note that the coverstock drawing shows an altimeter that appears to be attached to the nose cone? (Altimeter not included) Both the nose cone and the part that is at the bottom of the clear plastic tube are hollow. The one at the bottom is...

Ideas for painting 'just the tip' of nosecones?

It would be cool if there was an easy way to paint the tip of a nose cone in a nice even manner. I thought it would be simple. Just cut a hole in a piece of cardboard and slip that over the tip. It 'sorta' worked but there was some blow by and it ended up tilted.

Just got an Estes ESAM-58 and...

Oh... heh... embarrassing! Estes made a single page insert covering the fins. It fell out of the folded part. Never mind

Just got an Estes ESAM-58 and...

Just picked up an Estes ESAM-58 from Hobby Lobby for a good price. Opened it a moment ago and browsed the directions. Typical Estes directions, but wait! Nowhere in the directions does it cover the fins!!! It goes 'prepare nose cone', 'engine mount', 'mark tube', then straight to, 'shock...
