ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK 38mm submin w/ forged hair fins (experimental full I motor) - One Giant Leap for Mankind

Reminds me of the pre-BATF lawsuit days. I suggested we use the gratuitous amount of golden retriever hair from the dog to make hybrid fuel grains. My dad countered that we should pick up a bag from the local hair salon!

    X-Winder Creating Incomplete Parts

So I would question that your mandrel axis is moving less than the program thinks it is. I see you have a 1.5:1-ish belt reduction that could explain what you're seeing (if the software thinks it's not there). I would check both axis (since you're at it): Is your carriage axis (z-axis?)...

Built an innovative device to help putting epoxy on carbon/glass fiber

I started off doing just as you did right here. I mounted a 1hp electric motor to a 2x12 board and made an adjustable tailstock for length. It was awesome for doing a layup (I used cloth, not tape) and following up with sanding and scrim-coating all in place. I grew hungry for a new...

Creating a Nosecone for an 8" Dia. Big Bertha?

I have fusion 360 files for my 3-piece BB nosecone for a 4.6" OD tube.

I've gone off the deep end: working on a filament winder

Update time! First off, apologies for such slow progress. Last May we moved to a bigger house and I took till June getting the old house ready. From there there's been quite a bit of settling in and taking care of things around the house. There's also been another development which I'll get...

    12” Mega Punisher Build Thread

This is very similar to the project Thunderhead that flew at MDRA back in 2000 or so. It had 4x I435, 4xK1100, and a central M2500. Only difference was that the M was air-started at liftoff detection. It made for an interesting flame pattern that doubled in size with an audible thud at about...

    Contraption: Filament winder build

Here's a thought: Why not have an integrated motor case and airframe? Probably skip the hoop winding for the airframe section since you wont be having a 1,000psi ejection charge (that would probably violate NFPA 1127 4.11.1.) For the first layer on the airframe section you could maybe even...

CAD Software CAD programs: What does "parametric" mean in the context of CAD?

In non-parametric CAD, you're just placing lines, curves, etc to build your model/ representation. Which you better have most of your calculations done already because it's a pain to go back and fix stuff. In parametric CAD, you start with a sloppy sketch and then define it's shape via...

    Puffy lipos

I take them outside, beat with a hammer on concrete, cut in half, and let sit for a few days.... but that's just me.

    visibility of silver rockets?

I've done safety blue and silver before on a 5.5' tall level 1 sized air-frame (18" of 3" arount the motor mount, the remaining 2"). The thing was invisible over 2,000ft, but thanks to a good polish and wax, there was one hell of a glint from the sun. Nerve wracking to fly to 3k on a cloudy...

    Hello from Chester Springs

Welcome! I'm originally from West Chester but now I'm just north of Pottstown, so I know your stomping grounds just a little. You need to get yourself down to MDRA, sounds like it ought to be your next step!

I've gone off the deep end: working on a filament winder

My code generator is not open source, it's just a spreadsheet of configurable repeating patterns that comments itself out when the sequence is complete. I'm not a programmer, so my generator is brutish to say the least. Also, my way may not be the right way, but I got it it to work for me. I...

Kerbal Space Program versus Microsoft Flight Simulator

KSP will do a great job at teaching basic orbital mechanics and launch profiles. Orbiter will show you how difficult orbital mechanics are in the real world. There is an extremely steep learning curve to using the built in navigation displays. I've done Lunar flights, but I think I missed...

Kerbal Space Program versus Microsoft Flight Simulator

If you want a more modern and realistic spaceflight simulator, check out Orbiter: http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/index.html Bonus: it's free! I hope you like steep learning curves!

    Thermodynamics!

Could be a passive system from the evaporator coils: all cold air goes through the freezer before coming down into the fridge. Cold garage means a low duty cycle. Low duty cycle means little cooling going into the freezer.

    Artemis Launch

SLS is a parts-bin engineering job to "save money". Getting overbaked in the engineering oven by about a decade unfortunately is turning it into an example of the sunk cost fallacy. RS-25's we're both in the catalog of available engines and in stock. They are efficient, man rated, and play...

    Forward swept fins, any experience?

One of my early mid-power scratch builds had a set of 4 forward-swept fins made out of .080"? G-10. It always had beautiful straight flights until it caught bigger-motor disease. I think it was a G-104 that it got the death wiggle on. 2 adjacent fins blew off spectacularly. They broke off at...
