    Dodgy motor modification

"Motors. I will use only certified, commercially-made model rocket motors, and will not tamper with these motors or use them for any purposes except those recommended by the manufacturer." Yeah, whatever. Of course, I'd removed all the BP from all three motors before building this...

    See Through Model Rocket Engine

If the idea of someone modifying an Estes motor and then posting the results on YouTube upsets you, look away now. On the other hand, if you want to see in, graphic, slow motion detail, exactly what goes on when you press the "Fire" button...

    Random Junk

At a recent rocketry event, I'd been building a couple of more sensible models. Then, after a couple of beers, I noticed that there was quite a bit of junk lying around on my table, including the remnant of a nose cone which had been cut down for another project, and several balsa off-cuts left...

    Starters vs. igniters

SARA (that's Scottish Aeronautics and Rocketry Association, not to be confused with any other SARA's out there :)) recently conducted some tests with the new white-tip igniters, a.k.a. starters. Several rockets have been flown using the starters. They have proven very reliable so far, the...

    Firestreak scale photos

Another missile on display at East Fortune is the Firestreak, Britain's first IR-guided AAM, next to the Lightning fighter which carried it. Overall view, tail cone and fins, main fins:

    AIM-7 Sparrow photos

Last Saturday, the Museum of Flight at East Fortune had its annual air show. Having arrived early enough, I went round some of the museum's regular exhibits before the flying started. One of them is an AIM-7E sitting next to an F-4 Phantom. So I took a few photos... Overall view, close-up...

    Fireworks from a different viewpoint

What happens if you put a video camera on a drone and send it into the middle of a firework display? This: https://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=DE&hl=de&v=a9KZ3jgbbmI&hd=1

How's this for an air start?

Rocket Launching Quadcopter - Flight Test The copter looks stable enough as the rocket is launching and the stock Estes deflector plate seems to prevent it from being damaged as the rocket launches. The altitude of the copter is presumably limited by the length of the controller cable.

    Kaliningrad K-5M / RS-2U / AA-1 Alkali photos

As mentioned in the thread Fun with a DW, I got a chance to see a K-5M missile up close when on holiday in May. Here are some photos of the one on display at Flugplatzmuseum Cottbus: Full view of the missile from the side (above another missile, probably a Kh-23 / AS-7): One of the nozzles:

    Fun with a DW

Following my victory in the August Fliskits Design of the Month Contest, I received a Deuces Wild as part of the prize. A number of other projects have been distracting me but I've finally made a start. So, let's have some fun... Here's what's in the bag: First order of business: look...

    DFS 346

When I was on holiday in Germany during May, I saw this model in one of the museums I visited: It's the DFS 346, an experimental rocket plane designed by the Germans during WW2 but not completed. The design was taken over by the Russians, who did complete it, and dropped it from one of the...

    Pringles saucer

So there's a cap from a tube of Pringles sitting on the table, and there's me sitting half drunk next to the table, thinking that cap needed a motor mount stuffed through the middle of it. But only half drunk, which is why the motor mount is only 13mm. :D The vehicle was duly named Cuppand...

    Another "Identify This Rocket" thread

Can anyone identify either of the two missiles this side of the display case? The whole lot is part of a museum at former East German airbase Cottbus, which I visited last week. I'd like to make a model of one of them; the upper, smaller missile is probably easier. The great thing about these...
