    Drag separation/Drag difference

What was the body tube made from? Was it vented? I've had flights where my rocket rose so quickly, it over pressurized, and spit the nosecone, shearing the pins before any deployment event. -Mike

What was the first rocket you ever launched?

    Cox Honest John, around '72

Why Did Apollo/Saturn Really Disappear So Fast?

Over it's operational lifetime, Atlas never reached a 50% success rate. When Glenn and the others climbed on board, there was greater than a 50% chance it would explode. They did it anyway, because it was what needed to be done. They were lucky. They were Navy pilots already, the most dangerous...

    Motor Ejection Delay Issue

'Bonus Delay' used to be very common, when delays on HP RMS motors were short, medium & long. To the point where, if it's big enough to carry electronics, I use them. After a few shredded parachutes, and zippered tubes, it became apparent that even a simple timer is more consistent & reliable...

What did you do rocket wise today?

Putting the finishing touches on my Sparrow/HV-Arcus, that I hope to fly at Camden, SC next weekend.

    Old Motors

I have flown Vulcan motors from 1988 - 93 & 95, at an EX launch in Camden with no problems at all. They have been stored in a cool, dry place.

Death by PowerPoint: the slides that killed seven people

When doing things that are hard, or that have never been done before, in my experience the 'I don't know' response can usually be followed but 'But I can find out, and this is what it will take' is an acceptable tack with most management people, and while they may not be technical themselves...

What is most important in making a club attractive?

How tough is it to say 'boatgeek' ? JK, nobody can say my last name right either, unless they're Hungarian. Potties are good, big fields are good, food is good, People have always been good to me. As members, Help Set up/Break Down, do a stint as RSO, schlep some stuff, help keep the field...

Why does nobody use Liquid-Propellant rockets?

Systeme Solaire, a Canadian company, I think, has been around since the mid 80's, and promotes their liquid fueled motor. https://pages.total.net/~launch/ss67b3.htm My understanding, fourth hand, was that it was (is) difficult to launch successfully. -Mike

2 questions (one re: safety) on beginner 2-stage design

Jumpers are sort of a holdover from when we used to use mercury switches for staging, that was sort of all-in. Many of the safety issues have been solved by electronics that incorporate go/no go logic in the command chain. Several flight computers use accelerometers and even gyros to determine...

    Thrust:Weight Ratio -- Why 5:1?

I am a HUGE fan of like 20 to 1, reference Cert Level 1 below, but I guess y'all are talking minimums...

    Terrier Plans

Thanks to you all. This will be a fine subject. Dave had sent me the plans for the 2D, and now with plans for the HTR, I can have my choice. I think either would be good subjects to build and fly, my Dad was in the Navy so I remember seeing these on ships at Mayport when I was a kid. I favor...

    Madcow Aerobee-Hi

The Duplicolor rattle can color is called Orange Mist Metallic, but visually seems identical to me.

What keeps you in the hobby?

I stay in the hobby because it's so deep. Any direction I choose to turn there is a vast amount of stuff to figure out and learn. Modeling is a major aspect of it, I grew up 60 miles from the Cape for Gemini and all of Apollo, went to the junk yard to break nichrome out of heating elements to...

    Terrier Plans

Is Dave Popkin still around? I think he used to fly with TWP back in the day. When I can, I usually fly with ICBM in Camden, SC, but I also belong to SoAR which is a local NAR section. Thanks again for the help, It'll prolly be a while before I can get it built, I am currently finishing a...

Dave, Thank you so much, the article in the newsletter gives me everything I was looking for. What an amazing newsletter. I read it front to back! Is this the club you fly with? -Mike

Looking for an altimeter with a gyroscope

No doubt, but if you read the specs from Missile Works, it seems to me to be a bit more than a simple timer, and there are several available checks in the command chain, before the sustainer would be lit. (Velocity, Tilt, etc.) Obviously, the Raven has more capability, at over twice the price...

    Terrier Plans

Thanks Mike, it's a start, but the 2D has nike-like fins on the booster, and the 2nd stage looks a lot like a Standard ARM. Thanks Rich, I would if I knew how to do that. (I'm pretty remedial WRT operations on the forum) -Mike

Looking for an altimeter with a gyroscope

MISSILEWORKS PET2+ TIMER dosen't use a gyro, but may provide the functionality you are looking for. I have purchased one for my Sparrow HV-Arcus. And it's less expensive that the other units listed. Hope this helps, -Mike
