    4in MD custom build - Spark-S4

Well, we've been toiling away for a few months now and our next rocket is ready for its shakedown flight in a couple of weeks. The Spark-S4 is designed to be a modular, minimum-diameter system that breaks the fin can, motor tube, electronics bay, and recovery systems into separate systems that...

    Adjustable 75mm MD Motor Retainer

I really like this idea! Really you just need to account for the force of the motor because the motor lip is going to handle the recovery force. Have you measured the force at which it starts slipping in the tube?

    The Journey to 200k

Lots of progress. Going to break this up into multiple posts. One of the first things we did was to create cases for the 2 eggfinder units we have. The TRS and eggfinder mini are going to be our base trackers on the test bed rockets we are going to be flying. I've been running these RX units...

    The Journey to 200k

I am looking into use the peregrine CO2 system. After reading the aeropac report I did have concern with the CO2 deployment properly actuating. The Peregrine system uses a e-match and small amount of powder to actuate the system. It is fully sealed and has been tested in a vacuum to actuate. I...

    O3400 Min Diameter L3

Very nice flight! When is the next flight? also, is there anyway to prevent the erosion on the boattail? Is erosion like that normal?

    The Journey to 200k

it’s definitely a bookmarked thread of mine, along with Ravenex’s work. I must have read through it several times by now. Jim is definitely a pioneer for this type of project. I will be reaching out when we get to that point. Right now we were planning on exploring that in Q1 of next year.

    The Journey to 200k

Appreciate the opinion. My degree is in computer engineering degree and I have many years of electronics/firmware experience, which will definitely be a help here. If I didn’t have the background it wouldn’t have made the list. That said, I have no illusions the software will be easy. I am...

    The Journey to 200k

Agreed. My goal is to have a few positions that divvy up duties: launch coordinator that confirms and double checks every on the list and has a final go/no go authority. Photography coordinator that coordinates all of the ground photography and video. Recovery coordinator that coordinates...

    The Journey to 200k

It’s been a bit, but we are back. It's been a busy few years and we are ready to get back to building rockets. My dad and I were talking about what we wanted to do rocket wise in the next few years and we kept coming back to a high altitude rocket attempt. So, we settled on a goal of 200,000 ft...

    Ground testing with deployment bag

When Tom Cohen showed me how he does deployment bags, he’s folding the chute enough to line up the gores and then stuffing in the bag. So, what I’ve been doing is my normal folding up to the point in which I would start to roll it up burrito style and then stuff it into the bag. Tom said that...

Rocket prepped but not flown - how long do you keep prepped?

Disclaimer: You yourself need to decide how much risk you want to take on. For some, storing a fully prepped rocket with ejection charges hooked up is too much of a risk. For others it's not. If you decide to leave it prepped, here's what I suggest: Always store it in a dry place that's...

    3D printed 29mm fin can

Andrew, I agree with the others that it's an essential skill to have and master. Have you delved into your failures with the fin guide? Why didn't it work? What are some ways to mitigate that failure mechanism? Have you tried a guide like the posterboard guide or just the estes fine guide? Not...

Go home, Open Rocket. You're drunk!

Somethings wrong with your sim. The M2500 should sim to over 8,000. I also agree you need to check the CP/CG for instability. Check your motor delays and parachute deployments to make sure the sim is not trying to eject the chute right after motor burn out. Also, check your Mass and CG overrides...

    38mm to 29mm DIY adapter

Do not do the tape. Your motor has a lip or external snap ring on the nozzle end that seats against the MMT to transfer the forces of the motor thrust to the rocket. If you just use tape, you lose that transfer. The LOC adapter uses a piece of 38mm tube that's glued to the coupler as a thrust...
