Madcow "Level-2" Build, 4" Fiberglass Airframe w/54mm Motor

It's the perfect time of year to tackle this rewarding build!

Madcow "Level-2" Build, 4" Fiberglass Airframe w/54mm Motor

Grats on your nice flights! I still haven't launched my Level-2 Rocket with the L1000W. I was thinking that perhaps the fins aren't fluttering, but rather could a shock and/or significant turbulence be forming near the camera causing it to shake at transonic speeds? A vibrating/shaking...

SBR 4” Thor flies on a Loki I405 at Tulsa Rocketry launch

Nice flight. I think I hear a nice whistle after burnout. How well does your Thor whistle? When I was looking for a Thor kit a few years back, I could not find them and opted for a 3" LOC Athena... which looks like a 3" Thor.

LOC Athena 3 Build (Level 1)

How is the Athena Build Progressing? I'm looking forward to "hearing" your first flight video!

    Static Vent Port Sizing

    I agree with your reasoning.

    Static Vent Port Sizing

That's a good question. I would think some items to consider are: 1. how big the holes will be for the much larger volumes that the booster and payload tube volumes typically have. Altimeter bays typically have much less volume that the parachute compartments, but not always. 2. how will...

    Static Vent Port Sizing

A while back I did a little analysis for venting the parachute compartments with consideration of volume, vertical velocity, atmospheric pressure and shear pin strength etc. It's post number 60 in my Frenzy XL build thread. Here's a link...

LOC Athena 3 Build (Level 1)

Your bevels look very nice. I chose not to bevel the fins, but rather round forward fin leading edge, and lightly round the side edges of the fins. My thinking on this is that the plywood would be vulnerable to dings/dents if beveled thin. As you mention, the forward fin's trailing edge and...

LOC Athena 3 Build (Level 1)

With the coupler bonded to the payload (upper) tube I simply do the following to remove and install the avionics sled and bulkplates: Here's a picture of my sled and bulkplates during early assembly, but it should help with visualizing the procedures I've detailed below: 1. Disassembly a...

LOC Athena 3 Build (Level 1)

Yes, the AV bay was built into the coupler. Drogue in lower half, main upper. To make things a little simpler and lighter, I glued the coupler into the payload (upper) tube.

LOC Athena 3 Build (Level 1)

I really like the LOC Athena 3. The Pink and Black color scheme looks great! I built one of these a couple years ago with the 29mm mount and went Dual Deploy as well using an integrated altimeter bay and charge wells for both the drogue and main. Here's a link to the build thread with lots of...

Thoughts on the new madcow nike-apache as first hpr 2 stager?

I made it out late to Snow Ranch. It was a nice day with light winds, thought the high overcast made tracking difficult. My kids did get to participate in the Piñata Rocket, and I flew just one flight, a K2050ST in my Frenzy XL. I have not yet weighed each component. However, the density...

Thoughts on the new madcow nike-apache as first hpr 2 stager?

The 3.9" OD by 5" long Coupler between the 31" Booster Tube and the Transition/ISC, slides into the ISC transition 1.25". I grabbed a few screenshots from my OR model to detail this part. I could not find a way to make a transition with both a conical section and a straight section that...

Thoughts on the new madcow nike-apache as first hpr 2 stager?

Jim, Thank you for the detailed reply. I really appreciate all the information and experience sharing. Since you mentioned suspicious weight, I looked closely at the open rocket model that I'd downloaded (the one posted earlier in this thread).. and it was WAY off. I should have looked...

    Delay vs opening shock

How vulnerable is your SDX3 to zippering? A small drogue at 88 ft/sec (60 mph) shouldn't be too bad... unless you have a thin shock cord and cardboard tube that might easily zipper. It's been my experience that the darn motor delays are usually shorter than specified... something to...

Thoughts on the new madcow nike-apache as first hpr 2 stager?

That has yet to be answered. I have a number of Eggtimer Quantums to work with.. but have been looking at other electronics options. At this point, I'm leaning toward having the second stage ignition altimeter to be in the sustainer. What electronics would you suggest and where would you...

Thoughts on the new madcow nike-apache as first hpr 2 stager?

This will be my first 2 stage. I plan to wait and see what others are doing with the interstage and staging electronics before I start on my build. I also like the idea of seeing the separation, and 2nd stage ignition.. thus I plan to flying smaller motors initially.. Perhaps a 38mm full H...
