launch lug standoff on air commander?

I pulled the Estes air commander out of my build box from when they where cleared out a few years ago. I noticed that it has launch lug standoffs. I understand on some models with larger payload bays or odd noses (Honest John, Nikes, Redstone) it is necessary. I was also reading old...

new models available in Estes new page

they say the double ringer, boosted bertha and sasha are now available. Does that still leave the Black Brant II?

    flying before painting?

yesterday I was looking at the county (St Joe IN) fair rockets. Besides the weird paint choices, like a florescent orange Citation Patriot, with the decals. Orange without them would be fine. Most had very well sealed fins little grain showing here's the weird part: there was hand written...

estes motor mounts and construction order

I have noticed on kits that now the motor mount is glued in after the fins on many kits. For most of my 40 years in rocketry, it was glued in right after it was built. Is this to allow built in drying time to keep the centering rings from moving? Do people not know what "let dry" means. I...

something I noticed when building the new Saturn V

the new molded LEM shroud has a shock cord eye. Neither tube is a standard size. the LEM tube is just smaller than a bt 60. It would be hard for the regular scratch builder to use one. I wonder if they have plans or the tooling was just easier.

    most challenging Estes build?

I have the Black Star Voyager currently on the work bench. I think it is the second most challenging build I have done. I think the Odyssey was harder with the tube cutting, then the Asteroid Hunter simply because it required more unfamiliar skills. In my younger days I thought the Tomcat and...

    finishing my upscale Goblin

I took a launch pad Japanese artillery kit I had sitting around and built a BT 80 Goblin. This was helpful since the BT 80 ogive nose seems to have disappeared. I have two issues. I'm sure it needs nose weight. I used a bt 50 mount but made it E length. If I load the stock version and find...

    great estes service again

I had bad c11-5 and E12-4 at launch with my nephews in mid July. The C 11 blew the nozzle and sent my Goblin up about 50 feet. My Goblin lawn darted but was fine. The E separated from the casing and shot out the end breaking fins and scorching the chute of my Interceptor E. I sent Christine...

digging through my box of not quite finished rockets a few questions.

I was finishing up some stuff I stopped and put aside over the years. What glue do you use to keep the tower on the X prize Thunderstar? it has that "wasp" nose I tried regular testors like cement the first time. last month I tried some 5 minute epoxy and just got all sorts of goo off but it...

protostar and Nike x on new hobby lobby layout

maybe the airwalker is new there too. looks like they shortened the rocket section just a little. The protostar and Nike X were things I wanted so 40% coupons are in my future. Seems they cleared out more than they added this year.

rocket at the county fair and paint choices

I was at the fair yesterday and was looking at the rockets. Most of the kits were choices from the local Hobby Lobby. They were all well done and there was a great Mercury Redstone. I like the creativity on many of the models and there were a few Goblins with well chosen decor. My issue was...

estes new bundles on sale page.

They have five or so new bundles on the specials page. I have all the builder kits on my build pile already. I don't think I need a third Skydart or Maxi Sprint. The prices are pretty good. Some of them include controllers, and none of these more of those.

best use for my g40-7 motor

I found a g 40-7 on a recent trip to Indy. I have a Nike Smoke, The Mega Max and an unbuildt Argent. I have it "stored" in the Nike because 7 seconds seems too long on the Max. It would be my first composite motor and want to make the best use of it.

building the conquest and CA glue.

I was surprised how many steps on the Estes Conquest say to use CA glue. I hate the stuff. I know that some of it is so things set fast. I used the green Testors on many steps and plan to go back with some serious Titebond fillets. Is is just setting or are there strength issues as well? I...

plans for my estes sale parts. Renegade, Sentinel.

Two of my favorites are about to be recreated. One of my Vagabounds is about to become a Sentinel. I loved that rocket so much I upscaled to a BT 80 and down scaled to a BT50. I was going to though the wall it (fin breakage was a problem with the original) with the STM 12 tubes, but the fin...

    1/4 inch rod source?

I've looked at the rack at my local home improvement stores and only see 4 footers. I have the Estes pro stuff. I think six would be better. I don't see that shipping one would be good for it. I see the estes pro pad but don't see a two piece rod there.

    flight log software?

I have a notebook where I write down field, motor, damage, notes and such for each model and each flight. is there a program where I could do that and have it calculate total flights and average per model? Maybe Excel or something but I've never used it.
